Cesar Cabral (Yankees)

2/2/13 10:32 pm

According to Chad Jennings of the Journal News, Cesar Cabral isn’t expected to be 100% healthy by the start of the regular season.

Cabral was a Rule 5 selection before the 2012 season, buy was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his left elbow during spring training and missed the entire season. Once healthy, he could find a role as a left-handed specialist in the Yankees bullpen.

Mark Teixeira (Yankees)

2/2/13 10:25 am

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Mark Teixeira admitted that he could be entering the declining stage of his career.

“Maybe I’m slowing down a tick,” Teixeira said. “I’m not going to play forever. Eventually you start, I don’t want to say declining, but it gets harder and harder to put up 30 home runs and 100 RBI.” Teixeira struggled with injuries and effectiveness in 2012, and saw his streak of 30 home runs snapped at eight seasons. While it’s fair to expect his numbers to rebound with better health, it will probably be a lot closer to his 2010-2011 level of production than 2009. Teixeira’s .807 OPS last season was the lowest total of his career.

Russ Canzler (Yankees)

2/1/13 4:23 pm

Yankees designated INF/OF Russ Canzler for assignment.

The move clears a spot for the newly-signed Travis Hafner on the 40-man roster. This is the latest development in a busy winter for Canzler, who could soon be claimed off waivers for the fourth time in the space of two months. The 26-year-old batted .269/.299/.398 with three homers and a .697 OPS in 97 plate appearances with the Indians last season and has posted some strong numbers in the minors.

Travis Hafner (Yankees)

2/1/13 3:03 pm

Yankees signed DH Travis Hafner to a one-year, $2 million contract.

He’ll have a chance to make $4 million more through incentives. Hafner is obviously a poor bet to stay healthy, but he’s a good bet to be pretty productive when on the field, and, at $2 million, the Yanks haven’t risked much. The 35-year-old batted .228/.346/.438 with 12 home runs and a .784 OPS in 66 games with the Indians last season while battling knee and back injuries. He’ll be the Bombers’ regular DH against right-handed pitching.

Alex Rodriguez (Yankees)

2/1/13 12:59 pm

T.J. Quinn and Mike Fish of ESPN.com report that Anthony Bosch of Biogenesis of America clinic injected Alex Rodriguez with performance-enhancing drugs multiple times at the player’s Biscayne Bay mansion.

The report states that most athletes associated with the Coral Gables clinic “relied on intermediaries to transport the performance-enhancing drug regimens Bosch provided,” but A-Rod was only handled personally by Bosch. Bosch’s visits to A-Rod’s mansion were reportedly every few weeks, with one visit resulting in Rodriguez kicking Bosch out after he was unable to find a vein needed for an injection. A-Rod’s spokesman has already denied the new report, stating that “the allegations are not true.”

Alex Rodriguez (Yankees)

1/31/13 4:27 pm

Wallace Matthews and Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York were told by sources close to Alex Rodriguez that the veteran slugger has “no plans at all to retire.”

Not a surprise. The scenario has been discussed this week in the wake of a story that connected Rodriguez to an anti-aging clinic in Miami which distributed performance-enhancing drugs, but it was mostly wishful thinking by those who would like to see the Yankees get out from the $114 million left on his contract. A-Rod is currently rehabbing from hip surgery and has every intention to continue his playing career.

Alex Rodriguez (Yankees)

1/31/13 9:22 am

Sources told the New York Daily News that Alex Rodriguez is “unlikely to ever wear the pinstripes again.”

It sounds like a story leaked by the Yankees, who are doing all they can to get out of the $114 million that is owed to A-Rod over the next five years. “I don?t know why he would want to go through the pain of rehabbing and trying to play up to the caliber of player he was, and come back to a game where nobody wants him,” said the source. “If he did that, he?d be a part-time player and presumably unable to achieve any of the incentive clauses in the contract or even the milestones.”

Alex Rodriguez (Yankees)

1/29/13 5:20 pm

According to Wallace Matthews and Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York, the Yankees “are looking at about 20 different things” that could void Alex Rodriguez’s contract.

The Yankees aren’t likely to have much luck on that front, even with new evidence tying A-Rod to recent PED purchases from a clinic in Miami. The veteran third baseman is owed a total of $114 million in salary through the 2017 season. And all of that is guaranteed.

Derek Jeter (Yankees)

1/29/13 3:17 pm

Derek Jeter (ankle) took swings in the cage and fielded grounders Tuesday in Tampa.

Jeter fielded 55 ground balls Monday in his first on-field baseball activities since surgery, but he felt good enough to ramp it up to 72 grounders on Tuesday. While he still has some major hurdles to cross, the hope is that he’ll be ready for Opening Day.

Alex Rodriguez (Yankees)

1/29/13 12:32 pm

Alex Rodriguez released a statement Tuesday denying a connection to an anti-aging clinic in Miami which distributed performance-enhancing drugs.

“The news report about a purported relationship between Alex Rodriguez and Anthony Bosch are not true,” the statement read. “Alex Rodriguez was not Mr. Bosch’s patient, he was never treated by him and he was never advised by him. The purported documents referenced in the story ? at least as they relate to Alex Rodriguez ? are not legitimate.” Rodriguez was one of several players named in a story published by the Miami New Times on Tuesday. MLB is currently conducting an investigation on the matter.
