Paul Konerko (White Sox)

2/2/12 4:18 am

In an interview with Comcast SportsNet, Paul Konerko stated that he’s considering retiring after the 2012 or 2013 seasons.

“I would see it ending after next year or maybe another year,” Konerko said. “At some point you got to go home and be around your kids and have other things to do.” He also expressed frustration playing for a team that has been “back at square one” for several years. Konerko led Pale Hose regulars in batting average, homers, RBI, and walks in 2011. The team might have to become a serious title contender soon if they want to keep their stud hitter in tow.

Dan Johnson (White Sox)

2/1/12 12:10 pm

White Sox signed 1B/DH Dan Johnson to a minor league contract.

The deal presumably includes a spring training invite. Johnson, 32, batted just .118 (10-for-84) at the major-league level last year, but his game-tying home run in the final game of the regular season kept the Rays’ season alive. He’ll try to win a bench spot on Chicago’s Opening Day roster.

Adam Dunn (White Sox)

1/29/12 10:11 pm

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said his club has no interest in reacquiring Adam Dunn.

Unsubstantiated rumors floated earlier this offseason that Washington might take Dunn off Kenny Williams’ hands, but Rizzo emphatically denied the scenario. Washington missed out on Price Fielder and projects to go with Adam LaRoche again at first. The 32-year-old Dunn batted just .159/.292/.277 with 11 home runs and a .569 OPS over 496 plate appearances last season for the White Sox. He is still owed $14 million next season and $15 million in 2013 and 2014.

Adam Dunn (White Sox)

1/28/12 4:00 pm

Adam Dunn believes he’s on track for a bounce back season after his disappointing 2011 campaign.

“I?m going into this year feeling as good as I?ve felt in a long time and just ready to get started and quit talking about it,” Dunn said. ”It doesn?t matter where you go, everyone is talking about it. I realize that comes with [the territory], but I really can?t wait for Opening Day.” Dunn, 32, is coming off a season that saw him hit just .159/.292/.277 with 11 home runs and a .569 OPS over 496 plate appearances. He is still owed $14 million next season and $15 million in 2013 and 2014.

Chris Sale (White Sox)

1/28/12 2:15 pm

The White Sox are expected to monitor Chris Sale’s innings as he makes the transition to the starting rotation next season.

Sale, 22, threw 71 innings last year and hasn’t started since May of 2010 at Florida Gulf Coast University. “We’ll give this kid just enough experience and let him go,” said White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper at SoxFest. ”We’re going to do everything in our power to not put [his health] in danger.”

Jake Peavy (White Sox)

1/28/12 1:15 pm

Jake Peavy believes he has ”a lot left in the tank” and is ready to test what’s left of his surgically repaired right arm this spring.

“There’s no doubt that they told me 12 to 18 months out of surgery you are as good as you are going to get,” Peavy said. ”I’ve done all the rehab. We’ve done all the work. You know, who I am is who I am, and hopefully it’s a tick better and the guy we saw flashes of at times last year.” Peavy is in the last season of a three-year, $52 million contract signed in 2010. The White Sox hold a $22-million club option for 2013 with a $4 million buyout.

Matt Thornton (White Sox)

1/27/12 11:46 am

White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper expressed surprise on the Mully and Hanley Show Friday when told that manager Robin Ventura views Matt Thornton as the favorite to be the team’s closer.

“Who said that? You’re giving me news,” Cooper said. “It’s news to me.” The pitching coach added: “Like I said, Matt is certainly capable. You have Addison Reed is a kid who has to work into it. You can’t name him. You got Jesse Crain — he is a guy who is more than capable. We’ll figure it out.” In reality, Thornton is probably the favorite, but there will be a battle for the job in spring training. We like Reed best over the long term, but the Sox might ease the youngster into the role.

Juan Pierre (White Sox)

1/27/12 11:37 am

Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly reports that the Phillies have signed Juan Pierre to a minor league contract.

Salisbury reported earlier Friday that the two sides were in serious discussions, and evidently they’ve closed the deal. Financial terms are not yet known. Pierre batted .279/.329/.327 with two homers, 50 RBI and a .657 OPS over 711 plate appearances in 2011 and also went a career-worst 27-for-44 in stolen base attempts. It’s not the best spot for him in terms of how much playing time he’s likely to receive, but it will give him a better chance to earn a World Series ring. Pierre figures to back up in left and center field and serve as a pinch runner.

Juan Pierre (White Sox)

1/27/12 10:13 am

Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly reports that the Phillies are in “serious discussions” with free agent outfielder Juan Pierre regarding a minor league contract.

Pierre has evidently given up on finding a regular job somewhere, as he wouldn’t appear to be in line for much playing time in Philly, especially after Ryan Howard returns. The 34-year-old batted .279/.329/.327 with two homers, 50 RBI and a .657 OPS over 711 plate appearances in 2011 and also went a career-worst 27-for-44 in stolen base attempts.

Matt Thornton (White Sox)

1/25/12 7:54 pm

White Sox manager Robin Ventura confirmed Wednesday that he’s viewing Matt Thornton as his closer.

“It’s open, but right now I would say Matt is probably the guy to do that,” Ventura told WSCR-AM 670 in Chicago. Thornton, a 35-year-old left-hander, has a 2.84 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 260 innings since the start of the 2008 season. He should do just fine in the ninth inning.
