Victor Martinez (knee surgery) has been off crutches for 10 days.

Martinez had microfracture surgery on his left knee in late January and underwent a procedure in early March to help the healing of his ACL. V-Mart can’t afford any setbacks, but he’s encouraged about the possibility of returning in September. We should know more about his status when he undergoes an MRI during a check-up in July.

Updating a previous item, Victor Martinez underwent a procedure last week to help the healing of the ACL in his left knee.

V-Mart was originally expected to undergo ACL reconstruction on the knee, but Dr. Richard Steadman ultimately opted for a less serious procedure. The Tigers estimate that the 33-year-old will need approximately seven months to recover from January microfracture surgery, so there’s a chance he could be ready for baseball activities in late-August or September if all goes well. It’s an interesting possibility, but we won’t know more about his status until he undergoes a follow-up MRI in July.

Tom Gage of the Detroit News reports that there’s “new hope” Victor Martinez could return later this season because he didn’t need ACL reconstructive surgery on his left knee.

Very interesting. V-Mart had microfracture surgery on his left knee in February and was scheduled to undergo ACL reconstructive surgery last week, but apparently the damage wasn’t as extensive as originally believed. While this is encouraging news, we likely won’t know more about his status until sometime in July. Setbacks from microfracture surgery are also common, so the Tigers certainly won’t count on him.

Victor Martinez is likely to undergo his season-ending ACL surgery on Friday.

V-Mart got a second opinion on his knee Thursday in Vail, Colorado. If it confirms the original diagnosis of a torn ACL, he will undergo the major surgical procedure before the weekend. The Tigers will forge ahead, hoping that the addition of Prince Fielder makes up for the offense lost in Martinez’s absence. The 33-year-old hit .330/.380/.470 with 12 home runs and 103 RBI in 145 games last season as Detroit’s primary designated hitter.
