Joe Benson (Twins)

2/1/12 12:00 am

Twins’ prospect outfielder Joe Benson was robbed at gunpoint while in Venezuela playing winter ball.

Benson’s incident actually happened prior to Wilson Ramos’ kidnapping in Venezuela. The robbery occurred after the cab he was riding in crashed. While the Spanish-speaking driver was on the phone, four men approached Benson and took all of his belongings aside from a bag with his baseball spikes and some t-shirts. “When you don’t speak the language, there’s not much you can do,” said Benson. “You can’t really beg for your life. You can’t ask them not to pull the trigger. You can’t beg for mercy. I kind of sat there in silence, let everything happen.” Benson went back to the United States a few days later to regroup, but returned to Venezuela and batted .216 (11-for-51) with four RBI during his time with Tigres de Aragua. The 22-year-old was recently ranked as the Twins’ No. 2 prospect by Baseball America and figures to open the 2012 season with Triple-A Rochester.

Jamey Carroll (Twins)

1/28/12 6:39 pm

Jamey Carroll was officially endorsed by Twins manager Ron Gardenhire as his starting shortstop on Friday.

No surprise here. Carroll hit .290 with a .368 on-base percentage over the last two seasons with the Dodgers, and is expected to provide short-term stability to an otherwise uncertain middle infield situation.

Josh Willingham (Twins)

1/28/12 5:45 pm

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he expects Josh Willingham to be the team’s starting right fielder next season.

Willingham has started just 33 games in right field over his eight-year career, but stands to benefit greatly from getting out of Oakland and is considered at least serviceable defensively. In addition to Denard Span and Ben Revere, Trevor Plouffe is expected to be the Twins’ fourth outfielder after being moved from shortstop.

Joe Mauer (Twins)

1/28/12 2:30 pm

Joe Mauer (leg, pneumonia) has been throwing and hitting off of a tee for the last few weeks.

Mauer was limited to just 82 games last season for a variety of health reasons, but has essentially declared himself completely recovered after reportedly getting back to his listed weight of 235 pounds this offseason. According to Mason, Mauer claims it has been “night and day” compared to how he felt at this time last year.

Alexi Casilla (Twins)

1/28/12 10:47 am

The Twins are encouraged by Alexi Casilla’s strong performance in winter ball, according to Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tibune.

Casilla batted .336 during 31 regular season games for Gigantes del Cibao and will be a major upgrade over Tsuyoshi Nishioka and Luke Hughes if he can stay healthy. The Twins offered Casilla $1.065 million when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier this month.

Justin Morneau (Twins)

1/27/12 11:10 pm

Justin Morneau said Friday that he still has numbness in his left index finger which may take two years to fully go away.

The numbness in his finger was the result of a nerve problem in his neck which required surgery last June. While Morneau’s concussion symptoms have naturally drawn the most attention, the 30-year-old also underwent knee, foot, and wrist surgeries in 2011. Still, he expects to start hitting long-toss next week and take batting practice when spring training begins next month.

Scott Baker (Twins)

1/27/12 8:13 pm

Scott Baker said Friday that his elbow “feels great” and that he plans to throw off a mound 6-8 times prior to spring training.

Baker was limited to just 24 innings after the All-Star break last season due to a flexor muscle strain in his right elbow, but he went into the offseason healthy. The 30-year-old right-hander had a quality 3.01 ERA and 104/30 K/BB ratio over 110 2/3 innings during the first half of the season, so he’ll likely enter 2012 as an undervalued commodity in mixed leagues.

Nick Blackburn (Twins)

Nick Blackburn (forearm surgery) said Friday that he’s on track for spring training.

Blackburn had surgery in late-September to relieve pressure stemming from an entrapped nerve in his right forearm. Assuming no setbacks, he should enter spring training with a rotation spot to lose. The 29-year-old right-hander posted a 4.49 ERA and 76/54 K/BB ratio over 148 1/3 innings with Minnesota last season.

Denard Span (Twins)

1/27/12 1:34 pm

Denard Span said Friday that his body feels the best it’s felt in two years.

That includes his head, which is what we’re concerned with given his concussion issues last season. Span also said that his preference is to play center field, but he would be willing to move to a corner position if the team decides Ben Revere is a better fit there. The soon-to-be 28-year-old has been ignored in some early drafts we’ve seen, but he could wind up being a nice bounce-back candidate if he stays healthy.

Luke French (Twins)

1/27/12 10:28 am

Twins signed LHP Luke French to a minor league contract.

It’s not clear whether he’ll get an invite to spring training. French spent all of 2011 at Triple-A in the Mariners organization, posting an ugly 6.27 ERA over 26 starts. The 26-year-old will give the club some starter depth in the minors.
