Shane Victorino had a nice night in a losing effort against the Nationals on Saturday, going 3-for-4 and also picking up his 10th steal of the season.

On a night where the Phillies could only muster eight hits against Jordan Zimmermann and company, Victorino stood out as the only capable offensive performer. Forced to hit third in a lineup that is devoid of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, Victorino is off to a nice start to the season, hitting .259 with five homers, 14 RBI and the aforementioned 10 swipes.

Shane Victorino went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Thursday’s 4-0 win over the Braves.

It was his fifth long ball of the season. Victorino is still hitting well below his typical marks at .245/.286/.406.

Shane Victorino’s first home run of the season helped to lead the Phillies in their 3-1 victory over the Marlins on Thursday.

Victorino got the scoring started with a solo shot leading off the fourth inning. He finished 1-for-4 on the night, but is still hitting a solid .333 in the early going. He’s done a nice job setting the table at the top of the Phillies lineup.

The two-hit night was Victorino’s second in five games this season, while he’s already up to four stolen bases. Victorino has yet to rope an extra-base hit, but is still sporting an excellent .353/.450/.353 line. He appears poised for a big walk year.

Shane Victorino has hit safely in each of the Phillies’ last three games.

Victorino is 4-for-13 to begin the season, though all of his hits are singles. Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel has used him all over the lineup (first, second and fifth) in the early going and will likely continue to tinker until the offense shows some rhythm offensively.

Shane Victorino has somewhat backed off a previous statement that it would take a five-year deal for the Phillies to lock him up long-term.

“I’d like to,” Victorino said when asked about staying in Philadelphia. “I’m not saying this will be my last one. It might be. Who knows? What I’m saying is, why not finish it here? I made it seem like I want a five-year deal, but I’d love to stay.” Victorino’s agents, Sam and Seth Levinson, have not yet talked to the Phillies about an extension but plan to soon. “My agent is going to reach out to them,” Victorino said. “We’ll talk about it openly and see if the two sides can try to figure something out.” The outfielder is slated to become a free agent after the 2012 season.

Shane Victorino told reporters Thursday that locking him up would require a five-year contract.

“I?d like five years, yeah,” said the 31-year-old center fielder. “Why wouldn?t I? I signed for three. Why wouldn?t I want the next one to be longer? My agents say I can get a five-year deal on the market. Why not trust them?” Victorino is currently scheduled to become a free agent after the 2012 season. He batted .279/.355/.491 with 17 homers, 19 steals and 16 triples in 132 games last season.

Shane Victorino told Jayson Stark of ESPN.com that he would be willing to give up testing free agency in order to sign a long-term contract with the Phillies.

Victorino told MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki last week that he doesn’t plan on going anywhere, but he went into further detail with Stark. “What that statement was saying, was that I’m willing to give up free agency. A lot of guys won’t,” said Victorino. “In the game of baseball, free agency is what every major league player dreams of. You want to maximize your value, and of course I do, too. But what’s important to me is, I want to be here. I love playing here. My family loves the city. I love the city. So when I made that statement, that’s what I meant.” Victorino, 31, is currently due to become a free agent following the 2012 season.
