Ryan Zimmerman told Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post that he is open to a “creative” long-term contract extension with the Nationals.

Zimmerman told Kilgore that he would be open to structuring a potential deal in a way that would free up money in the Nationals? budget to build a competitive team around him. “Both sides are willing to try and be creative and work some stuff out,” said Zimmerman. “I have two years left here for sure. I would like to make that however many years I have left playing. We?ll see where it goes.” The 27-year-old is due to make $12 million in 2012 and $14 million in 2013 before hitting free agency. Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reported earlier this week that Zimmerman has told the team exactly what it would take to sign him to a long-term deal. Now that Prince Fielder is with the Tigers, the Nationals should have enough room in their budget to bridge the gap.

According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, third baseman Ryan Zimmerman has told the Nationals exactly what it would take to sign him to a long-term extension.

A source told Rosenthal that “an agreement between Zimmerman and the Nationals is within reach.” But the 27-year-old is under contract through the end of the 2013 season, so there’s no real rush to get something done this winter. The Nats, for the time being, can focus solely on their talks with free agent slugger Prince Fielder.

Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports that the Nationals and Ryan Zimmerman are still having discussions about a contract extension.

Zimmerman has said numerous times that he wants to stay with the Nationals for his entire career, but Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post hears that the two sides are no closer to a deal. The 27-year-old is due to make $12 million in 2012 and $14 million in 2013 before hitting free agency. As one of the best all-around third baseman in the game, he would almost certainly command a contract north of $100 million.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo acknowledged Tuesday that he has begun preliminary discussions on a contract extension with Ryan Zimmerman.

“It’s important to us,” said Rizzo. “We?ve already begun preliminary discussions with his people. He’s an important piece for us, a guy that we would like to have here long-term.” While Rizzo appears optimistic, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post hears that no specifics have been exchanged and no proposals are on the table. Meanwhile, Zimmerman’s agent, Brodie Van Wagenen, says there are no active discussions on an extension.
