Ryan Theriot (elbow) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Thursday.

It’s the first day he’s eligible. Theriot is expected to battle Emmanuel Burriss for playing time upon activation. “It’ll be competitive. I’ll leave it at that,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “We’ll go with the hot hand. Theriot has a resume and a history of hitting.”

Giants placed INF Ryan Theriot on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 9, with right elbow inflammation.

Theriot has already battled injuries and illness in the early part of the season, and was only hitting .179 with two RBI in his 56 at-bats while on the field. He should be back to his utility role within a couple of weeks, but shouldn’t be owned in any fantasy leagues.

Ryan Theriot is expected to be available for Saturday’s game.

Theriot was too sick to fly with the team to New York on Thursday and didn’t make it to the ballpark in time for Friday’s game. However, he should be ready to contribute off the Giants’ bench for the rest of the weekend.

Ryan Theriot is not in Friday’s lineup against the Mets due to illness.

It was a bit of a surprise to see Emmanuel Burriss in the starting lineup against left-hander Jon Niese, but now we have our explanation. Theriot was too sick to make the flight Thursday, but is expected to make it to New York at some point on Friday.

Ryan Theriot will start at second base for the Giants in Friday’s opener.

Emmanuel Burriss had been pegged as Freddy Sanchez’s replacement, but evidently manager Bruce Bochy will go with the veteran. Theriot is a fantasy option only in NL-only leagues, and a weak one at that.

X-rays on Ryan Theriot’s face were negative.

Theriot was removed from Monday’s Cactus League game after getting hit in the face by a pickoff throw. He showed up to camp Tuesday with a black eye and a swollen nose, but those are obviously not serious injuries.

ESPN’s Jayson Stark reports the Giants are aggressively shopping Ryan Theriot and Mike Fontenot.

Stark suggests the Phillies and Braves could have interest. Theriot, 32, is an effective slap hitter with a .282 career batting average, but his days as a starting major league shortstop should be put to rest. Emmanuel Burriss currently projects as the Giants’ Opening Day second baseman.

Giants signed SS Ryan Theriot to a one-year contract.

The deal was reported earlier and has now been confirmed by the club. CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman reports that the contract is for $1.25 million, with $750,000 more possible in incentives, but it’s interesting to note that the deal is not guaranteed. But, barring something unforeseen, Theriot should make the Opening Day roster and is probably the favorite to start over Brandon Crawford. He produced an unimpressive .271/.321/.342 batting line with one home run, 47 RBI, four stolen bases and a .662 OPS over 483 plate appearances in 2011 for St. Louis.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Giants have signed free agent infielder Ryan Theriot to a one-year deal.

Heyman says he’ll receive $1.25 million guaranteed, with a possible $750,000 more in incentives. It’s probably the best possible landing spot for Theriot, as he’s likely the favorite to start at shortstop over Brandon Crawford. The problem is that he can’t really play shortstop anymore and hit an unimpressive .271/.321/.342 with one home run, 47 RBI, four stolen bases and a .662 OPS over 483 plate appearances in 2011 for the World Champion Cardinals.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Reds and Rays are in on free agent infielder Ryan Theriot.

Theriot wouldn’t start for either team, but he could be useful as a backup middle infielder. The 32-year-old was non-tendered by the Cardinals last month after batting .271/.321/.342 with one home run, 47 RBI, four stolen bases and a .662 OPS over 483 plate appearances in 2011. He has a .775 career OPS against left-handed pitching.
