Royals

Royals signed OF Ramon Hernandez Jorrin to a minor league contract.

“We had a chance to watch him play in games and we liked him,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “Several other teams were trying to sign him as well.” Jorrin, 22, agreed to terms with the Royals when the team recently evaluated him in the Dominican Republic. His signing bonus is expected to be in the range of $750,000.

Jeff Francis (Royals)

1/25/12 10:24 pm

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Reds are close to a minor league deal with Jeff Francis.

John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer mentioned earlier that the two sides were “talking.” And it seems they’ve quickly found a common ground. Francis will presumably be allowed to compete for a spot in the Reds’ starting rotation this spring. He posted a 4.82 ERA and 91/39 K/BB ratio in 183 innings last season for the Royals.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer’s John Fay, the Reds are “still talking” to Jeff Francis.

Francis is also thought to be attracting interest from the Mariners, Blue Jays and Mets. The left-hander posted a weak 4.82 ERA and 91/39 K/BB ratio in 183 innings last season for the Royals, but he should come cheap.

Roman Colon (Royals)

1/25/12 4:17 pm

Royals signed RHP Roman Colon to a minor league contract.

The deal also comes with an invitation to spring training, but Colon is doubtful to earn a spot in the Royals’ Opening Day bullpen. He spent the entire 2011 season at the Triple-A level, posting a 4.85 ERA in 29 2/3 innings. The righty will function as organizational relief depth for the Royals.

Alex Gordon (Royals)

1/21/12 3:00 pm

Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star thinks Michael Cuddyer’s three-year, $31.5 million contract with the Rockies could be “the general framework” for a new deal with Alex Gordon.

Both Gordon and Cuddyer are represented by the same agent and Mellinger suspects that a four-year, $35 million contract would be a fair agreement for both sides. Gordon recently requested $5.45 million in salary and was offered $4.15 million by the Royals when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier this week. There appears to be mutual interest in a contract extension.

Jeff Francis (Royals)

1/20/12 2:59 pm

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that Jeff Francis is starting to attract more interest from teams looking for starting pitching help.

Crasnick says the Mariners, Reds, Blue Jays and Mets are among the clubs “keeping tabs” on the left-hander. Francis compiled a 4.82 ERA and 91/39 K/BB ratio in 183 innings this past season for the Royals but did prove to be durable in making 31 starts. With multiple teams showing interest, it sounds like he should be able to net a guaranteed deal.
