Aroldis Chapman (Reds)

5/21/12 9:34 pm

Aroldis Chapman was arrested Monday in Grove City, Ohio after driving 93 mph on a suspended license.

Chapman was pulled over after he was recorded speeding while driving his black 2010 Mercedes S63. The Cuban left-hander was then arrested after the officer discovered he had a suspended Kentucky driver’s license. He was released after posting bond and is expected to appear in court on June 6. The Reds have yet to issue a comment on the matter.

Mike Leake (Reds)

5/21/12 8:58 pm

Mike Leake was brilliant against the Braves Monday in picking up his first victory of the season, limiting them to one run on just two hits and a walk over eight innings in the 4-1 win.

He punched out six batters in the outing. It’s Leake’s second straight quality start and third in the last four outings, as the righty appears to have righted the ship after a slow start. He’ll take a 5.32 ERA and 1.38 WHIP into the weekend start against the Rockies.

Sean Marshall (Reds)

5/21/12 8:54 pm

Sean Marshall retired the only batter he faced to nail down his eighth save of the season in Monday’s win over the Braves.

With Aroldis Chapman unavailable due to his recent workload, Jose Arredondo started the ninth and retired the first two batters, but Marshall came on to record the final out after Arredondo issued a couple walks. The lefty will get the occasional save chance when Chapman has been overworked.

Drew Stubbs (Reds)

5/21/12 8:50 pm

Drew Stubbs hit two of the Reds’ four solo homers in Monday’s win over the Braves.

Stubbs got the scoring started in the first with a blast and connected on the second of back-to-back-to-back shots for the Reds in the fourth. He now has five bombs and seven steals to go along with a .244 batting mark this season.

Scott Rolen (Reds)

5/21/12 4:10 pm

Scott Rolen (shoulder) recently received a cortisone shot.

Rolen was placed on the disabled list earlier this month with a strained left shoulder and has yet to resume swinging a bat. Reds manager Dusty Baker said on Saturday that he’s not sure when the 37-year-old third baseman will be ready to return. With his future very much in doubt, Todd Frazier makes for a smart pickup in deeper mixed formats.

Johnny Cueto (Reds)

5/20/12 3:41 pm

Johnny Cueto scattered eight hits and two runs across seven innings of work at Yankee Stadium Sunday, improving to 5-1 in Cincinnati’s 5-2 win.

Cueto struck out five and walked two in his seventh quality start in nine outings this season. Picking up where he left off last season, Cueto will bring a 1.97 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 38/12 K/BB ratio into his Friday start against the Rockies at home.

Ryan Ludwick (Reds)

5/20/12 3:36 pm

Ryan Ludwick went 3-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBI in Sunday’s win at Yankee Stadium.

Ludwick took CC Sabathia deep for a solo shot in the seventh inning. A badly needed day for Cincinnati’s would-be left fielder, who entered this afternoon hitting .167/.310/.167 in the month of May. The home run was his first since April 24. A nice day, but Ludwick should still be in a timeshare with Chris Heisey going forward.

Aroldis Chapman (Reds)

5/20/12 3:32 pm

Aroldis Chapman recorded his first save of the season in Sunday’s 5-2 win in Yankee Stadium, notching his 39th strikeout in a scoreless inning of work.

Anointed the Reds’ new closer early Sunday, Chapman was believed to be unavailable for today’s series finale after appearing in three of Cincinnati’s past four games, but ended up making his 18th appearance of the season. Clearly the Reds’ best reliever ? if not the best bullpen arm in all of baseball ? Chapman should have little trouble “making the adjustment” to the ninth inning. Sean Marshall can be dropped in all formats.

Edgar Renteria (Reds)

5/19/12 8:33 pm

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that Edgar Renteria has turned down two contracts and is still leaning toward retirement.

Renteria was offered minor league deals from two National League clubs over the winter and turned them down, though we aren’t sure if those are the offers Heyman is alluding to. The 35-year-old has not filed retirement papers because he remains open to resuming his career if the right opportunity comes along; Heyman mentions the Brewers as a possibility. The five-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner owns a .286/.343/.398 career batting line over 16 major league seasons to go along with 2,327 hits.
