Clay Buchholz (Red Sox)

5/16/12 10:03 pm

Clay Buchholz continued to slowly get back on track in Wednesday’s loss to the Rays, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk in five innings of work.

He struck out five. Buchholz actually came out for the sixth, but was yanked after allowing back-to-back singles to lead things off. Hardly a dominant outing, but Buchholz has now allowed only five runs (four earned) in his past 11 1/3 innings, lowering his ERA from an unseemly 9.09 to a slightly more palatable 7.77. At the very least, he’s on the right track. He’ll look to continue getting in gear against the Orioles in Baltimore on Monday.

Kevin Youkilis (Red Sox)

5/16/12 9:41 pm

Kevin Youkilis (back) went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and a run scored in three plate appearances during his first rehab game with Triple-A Pawtucket Wednesday.

He was in the DH slot in the PawSox’s lineup. Youkilis will take Thursday off before playing third base for Pawtucket Friday. It’s possible he could rejoin the Red Sox this weekend if all goes well.

Daisuke Matsuzaka (Red Sox)

5/16/12 6:45 pm

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine indicated that Daisuke Matsuzaka (elbow) likely won’t be ready to rejoin the team after his next two rehab starts.

It will be the end of his 30-day rehab assignment, but if the Red Sox don’t think he’s ready, they can place him back on the disabled list and begin a new rehab assignment. “I don’t think he’s all that close to pitching in the major league,” said Valentine. “Not until he’s ready. It’s not the calendar that’s going to dictate whether or not a guy pitches in the major leagues.” Bobby V also indicated that Dice-K is still working on getting his mechanics in order. We had anticipated possible seeing him before the end of May, but it appears that won’t happen.

Andrew Bailey (Red Sox)

5/16/12 4:06 pm

Andrew Bailey (thumb) is expected to begin a throwing program next week.

Bailey had a checkup Wednesday with Dr. Thomas Graham and apparently showed good progress. The right-hander is aiming to join the Red Sox near the All-Star break and should take over the ninth-inning gig within a week or two of being activated.

Josh Beckett (Red Sox)

5/15/12 6:09 pm

Josh Beckett struck out nine in seven innings and combined with two relievers on a shutout of the Mariners on Tuesday.

For all the angst surrounding Beckett lately, this was his fifth quality start in seven outings this season. His fastball is still a bit off, so don’t expect him to return to 2011 form. Still, he should produce value in mixed leagues the rest of the way.

Mike Aviles (Red Sox)

5/15/12 6:06 pm

Mike Aviles doubled twice and knocked in two runs against the Mariners on Tuesday.

Manager Bobby Valentine has taken to batting Aviles ninth against righties and first against lefties. It’s not ideal for his fantasy value, but it likely is the smart way to play it. Aviles has nice power numbers for a shortstop, but his OBP currently sits at .292.

Kevin Youkilis (Red Sox)

5/15/12 12:53 pm

Kevin Youkilis (back) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Pawtucket.

ESPN’s Buster Olney previously indicated that a minor league rehab assignment was imminent, but we now have the specifics. Youkilis is expected to get three at-bats as the designated hitter in his first game back, but he’ll likely need to play multiple games at third base before the club considers activating him from the disabled list. It’s possible he could return this weekend if all goes well.

Felix Doubront (Red Sox)

5/15/12 12:46 pm

Felix Doubront was hit in the right ear by a fly ball during workouts Tuesday at Fenway Park.

Doubront fell to the ground after being hit near the warning track, but he managed to walk off the field under his own power. “The ball hit off the fungo and I didn’t see the ball,” said Doubront. “But I’m fine.” The southpaw should be fine to make his next scheduled start Thursday against the Rays.

Kevin Youkilis (Red Sox)

5/15/12 12:35 pm

Kevin Youkilis (back) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment in the next 48 hours.

Youkilis was eligible to return from the disabled list Monday, but he only recently began baseball activities. It’s not clear when he’ll return from the disabled list, but his rehab stint doesn’t figure to be a lengthy one. Will Middlebrooks may soon be sent down to the minors so that he can continue to play every day.

Jon Lester (Red Sox)

5/14/12 8:50 pm

Jon Lester was brilliant against the Mariners Monday, going all nine innings while allowing just one run on eight hits and no walks while striking out six in a 6-1 win.

He threw 119 pitches in the gem. Lester has been pretty inconsistent this season, and he’s yet to get the strikeouts going, but he now has a 3.71 ERA and 1.27 WHIP on the year, so he’s the least of Boston’s rotation problems. The southpaw gets the Phillies this weekend.
