David Ortiz (Red Sox)

2/4/12 4:49 pm

An arbitration expert tells the Boston Herald that the Red Sox’s offer is ”more in line with the market” than the request submitted by David Ortiz.

Ortiz is seeking $16.5 million in salary, but recent free agents that compare favorably will be making between $12 million and $14 million this season, indicating that the hearing could result in favor of the Red Sox. According to the report, the fact that Ortiz is being offered slightly more than what he made last year at an advancing age will be difficult to ignore. Ortiz turned 36 in November and batted 309/.398/.554 with 29 home runs and 96 RBI this past season.

Vicente Padilla (Red Sox)

2/2/12 12:14 pm

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington told Alex Speier of WEEI.com that they expect Vicente Padilla to arrive to spring training on time.

Padilla is reportedly facing an order not to leave his native Nicaragua due to a child support case. He only owes around $4,200, so it’s probably fair to say this matter will be resolved fairly quickly. “At this point there is no reason to believe he is in jeopardy of reporting late,” said Cherington. Padilla, 34, signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox last month and could be in the mix for a rotation spot during spring training.

Vicente Padilla (Red Sox)

2/2/12 9:00 am

According to the La Prensa newspaper in Nicaragua, Vicente Padilla is facing an order not to leave Nicaragua until a child support matter is resolved.

Padilla owes roughly $4,200 in child support. He had an arrest warrant issued for his failure to show up in court for a child support hearing, only to have the warrant revoked. The 34-year-old right-hander signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox last month, but he won’t be able to travel to the United States until there is some resolution.

Anthony Ranaudo (Red Sox)

2/1/12 7:41 pm

Red Sox GM Ben Cherington said pitching prospect Anthony Ranaudo is likely to open 2012 at Double-A.

Ranaudo, 22, posted a 3.97 ERA and 117/46 K/BB ratio in 127 innings last season between Low-A Greenville and High-A Salem. Those aren’t lights-out numbers, but the Red Sox believe the righty is a high-level talent, capable of moving quickly through their farm system.

David Ortiz (Red Sox)

1/31/12 12:14 pm

According to FOX Sports’ Jon Paul Morosi, the Red Sox and David Ortiz are “increasingly likely” to require an arbitration hearing to set the DH’s salary of 2012.

Ortiz asked for $16.5 million and was offered $12.65 million when arbitration figures were exchanged a few weeks ago. The two sides have been unable to make much progress since. Ortiz, 36, batted .309/.398/.554 with 29 home runs and 96 RBI in 146 games last season.

Daisuke Matsuzaka (Red Sox)

1/31/12 9:17 am

Daisuke Matsuzaka threw his first bullpen session Monday since undergoing Tommy John surgery.

“Today is like a warm-up,” Matsuzaka said after the short mound workout. “I think I’ll throw harder next week.” The 31-year-old right-hander underwent the Tommy John reconstructive procedure in June and is unlikely to return to major league action until late in the 2012 season. He’s entering the final year of his contract with the Red Sox.

Tim Wakefield (Red Sox)

1/29/12 1:09 pm

Tim Wakefield told John Torres of FloridaToday.com that retirement is “something that my wife and I need to talk about.”

“I just saw that (Jorge) Posada retired, you know it’s something that my wife and I need to talk about,” Wakefield said. “I?d probably need to talk about it with my kids, too. Ultimately, I would like to obviously play for the Boston Red Sox for one more year and see where it goes.” It seems like the 45-year-old will only continue playing if the Red Sox give him the opportunity, and at this point it doesn’t appear that the team is super anxious to bring him back. Wakefield posted a 5.12 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 93/47 K/BB ratio in 154 2/3 innings last season.

Carl Crawford (Red Sox)

1/29/12 9:16 am

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes that Carl Crawford (wrist) “will start the season on the disabled list.”

It sounds like he’s just speculating, as the Red Sox have not ruled the outfielder out for Opening Day, but it’s obviously noteworthy. Crawford underwent surgery on his left wrist earlier this month to remove cartilage, and although the procedure was considered minor, it sounds like it could keep him out at the start of the year. The 30-year-old will be looking to bounce back in a big way in his second year with Boston after hitting just .255/.289/.405 batting line with 11 home runs, 18 stolen bases and 56 RBI across 130 games in 2011.

Conor Jackson (Red Sox)

1/27/12 6:02 pm

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Athletics still have some interest in free agent Conor Jackson.

Jackson was mentioned as a possibility when the A’s were trying to replenish their outfield earlier this winter, but he remains on their radar even after this week’s signing of Jonny Gomes. The 29-year-old batted .244/.310/.341 with five homers, 43 RBI and a .651 OPS over 114 games last season between the A’s and Red Sox.

John Maine (Red Sox)

1/27/12 5:06 pm

Red Sox signed RHP John Maine to a minor league contract.

He’ll also get an invite to spring training, where he’s expected to get a look as a reliever. Maine posted an ugly 7.43 ERA over 11 starts with the Rockies’ Triple-A affiliate last season before leaving the team in June following more shoulder issues. The 30-year-old right-hander is a long shot to make the team.
