Rays

Jeremy Hellickson (Rays)

5/16/12 10:05 pm

Jeremy Hellickson held the Red Sox to one run on five hits and two walks in six innings of Wednesday’s 2-1 win.

Hellickson struck out six in improving to 4-0. It hasn’t always been pretty, but Hellickson is now the owner of a 2.77 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 35/18 K/BB ratio through his first 48 2/3 innings. He’ll get the Blue Jays at home on Monday.

Luke Scott (Rays)

5/16/12 9:58 pm

Luke Scott went 1-for-2 with his 27th RBI in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over the Red Sox.

Scott has had just one two-hit night in 14 May games, but has still managed to drive in 10 runs. He’ll bring a .233/.289/.483 triple slash into play on Thursday.

Will Rhymes (Rays)

5/16/12 9:30 pm

Will Rhymes collapsed on the field during Wednesday’s game after he took first base following a hit-by-pitch.

It was a scary incident. Rhymes was in a ton of pain after getting hit by a pitch on his arm, but he took his base after being looked at by trainers. Then, just before the next batter stepped in, he fell down in a heap at first base. He eventually sat back up and was taken off in a cart by paramedics. We’ll update his status when more is known.

Jeff Niemann (Rays)

5/16/12 6:17 pm

Rays transferred RHP Jeff Niemann from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

The Rays initially provided a 4-6 week timetable for Niemann, who suffered a fractured right fibula Monday, but he’ll have to sit out at least two months now. The team has yet to announce who will replace him in the rotation, but it will either be Alex Cobb or Chris Archer.

Rich Thompson (Rays)

5/16/12 6:13 pm

Rays purchased the contract of OF Rich Thompson from Triple-A Durham.

Thompson was just acquired earlier in the day from the Phillies, and now we know why. The 33-year-old can play all three outfield positions and will give the Rays another bench option with Brandon Guyer going on the DL.

Brandon Guyer (Rays)

5/16/12 6:11 pm

Rays placed OF Brandon Guyer on the 15-day disabled list with a strained shoulder.

Guyer first started experiencing the soreness over the weekend, and it wasn’t going away, so the Rays decided to make a move. Rich Thompson has taken his spot on the roster.

Jose Lobaton (Rays)

5/16/12 2:20 pm

Jose Lobaton (shoulder) will continue his minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Montgomery.

Lobaton began his rehab stint Saturday with High-A Charlotte and went 0-for-5 in two games. The 27-year-old has been on the shelf since mid-April due to right shoulder soreness. It’s not clear when he’ll rejoin the Rays, but he’s obviously getting close.

Rich Thompson (Rays)

5/16/12 11:53 am

Rays acquired OF Rich Thompson from the Phillies for OF Kyle Hudson.

Thompson, 33, was hitting .307/.390/.398 with 11 RBI, seven stolen bases and a .788 OPS over his first 29 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season. He hasn’t played in the big leagues since 2004 as a member of the Royals and will continue to serve as minor league depth with his new organization.

Alex Cobb (Rays)

5/15/12 8:58 pm

Rays manager Joe Maddon said it will be either Alex Cobb or Chris Archer taking Jeff Niemann’s (leg) spot in the rotation.

Wade Davis, who made 29 starts each of the last two seasons for Tampa, will remain in the bullpen, where he’s posted a 2.04 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over 12 appearances. While Archer has pitched a bit better than Cobb of late at Triple-A Durham, allowing one run over his last two starts, Cobb’s numbers are better overall this season, and he pitched well for the big club last year. He would be our bet to get the nod. Niemann’s spot comes up Saturday against the Braves.

Fernando Rodney (Rays)

5/15/12 8:54 pm

Fernando Rodney slammed the door on the Blue Jays on Tuesday, picking up his 11th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

Rodney fanned two of the three hitters he faced, and now boasts a spectacular 0.51 ERA and 17/3 strikeout to walk ratio in 17 2/3 innings. With as well as Rodney has pitched, he may keep his job even once Kyle Farnsworth eventually returns from the DL.
