Josh Hamilton (Rangers)

2/3/12 3:54 pm

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said contract extension talks for Josh Hamilton will be tabled while the outfielder sorts through his personal issues.

“Right now there’s more important things to deal with,” Daniels said. It’s no surprise, obviously, after Hamilton had a relapse at a bar Monday night. The outfielder was very open and honest while talking to the media Friday, and the Rangers have told him they’ll continue to support him. We can’t help but wonder, though, if it will give the team more pause when it comes to forking out a big money extension.

According to Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News, Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton was spotted drinking alcohol on Monday night at a bar in the DFW area.

What he drink and how much is currently unclear. Hamilton, a recovering addict, is supposed to remain completely sober as part of a pledge he’s made to his family and the Rangers organization. A Rangers spokesman said in a statement to the Dallas Morning News that the team is “aware of a situation” but not ready to make a comment.

Nelson Cruz (Rangers)

1/31/12 9:35 pm

Nelson Cruz told Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportesLosAngeles.com on Tuesday that he hopes to avoid an arbitration hearing with the Rangers on February 17.

Cruz, a second-time arbitration-eligible player, requested $7.5 million and was offered $5.5 million from the Rangers when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier this month. The 31-year-old said the two sides are currently negotiating a one-year contract, but have also left the door open for a multi-year deal. “I?m not afraid of the process,” said Cruz. “If we need to go to arbitration, I?ll do it. But in an ideal world, it’s better to avoid it altogether.” The Rangers haven’t been to an arbitration hearing since Jon Daniels took over as general manager, so they’ll likely find a middle ground in the days to come.

Mitch Moreland (Rangers)

1/31/12 4:32 pm

Mitch Moreland (wrist surgery) began hitting in mid-January.

Morleand was bothered by a right wrist injury after the All-Star break last year and eventually underwent surgery in November. “It’s feeling great,” Moreland said during a radio appearance Saturday on 103.3 FM in Dallas. “I’ve been hitting. No problems there. Working out. Not very many limitations I guess you could say. Therapy is going good. The range of motion is there.” Barring any setbacks, the 27-year-old is expected to be ready for Opening Day and will serve as the Rangers’ primary first baseman this season. However, he’s mostly an option in AL-only fantasy leagues.

According to Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas.com, the Rangers and manager Ron Washington have agreed to a two-year contract extension.

The new deal will carry him through the 2014 season. The extension is well-deserved, as Washington owns a 427-383 record (.527) over his first five seasons at the helm in Texas, including back-to-back American League pennants.

Koji Uehara (Rangers)

1/28/12 6:20 pm

Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun hears the Orioles have had ”sporadic conversations” with the Rangers about bringing back Koji Uehara, and that it’s something the team ”still maintains interest in.”

Rangers GM Jon Daniels is reluctant to give away Uehara, especially considering the Orioles managed to get two solid young players for him from Texas just a few months ago. Even at his $4 million price tag, Connolly suspects that Uehara will have trade value to other clubs who need back-end bullpen help and ultimately ends up somewhere other than Baltimore. The 36-year-old posted a 2.35 ERA and 85/9 K/BB ratio over 65 innings of work this past season.

Kyle Hudson (Rangers)

1/28/12 5:40 pm

Rangers signed OF Kyle Hudson to a minor league contract.

The deal includes an invite to spring training. The Orioles were forced to release Hudson earlier this week after he failed to attract interest on waivers. The 25-year-old doesn’t have any home runs in 1,611 plate appearances in the minors, and has stolen 119 bases in 389 career games.

Ian Kinsler (Rangers)

1/28/12 3:18 pm

Ian Kinsler said he doesn’t have anything new to report on a possible long-term extension with the Rangers, and indicated that there haven’t been many discussions with the club in that regard so far this offseason.

“I would love to stay here. I?ve stated that and made that pretty well known,” Kinsler said. “These things don?t easily come about. It takes a lot of conversation and thinking on both sides.” Kinsler is under contract through the 2013 season and getting him re-signed is not viewed as a priority right now. He is set to make $7 million in 2012 and has a club option for $10 million in 2013.

Josh Hamilton (Rangers)

1/28/12 8:30 am

General manager Jon Daniels confirmed that the Rangers would like a long-term contract for Josh Hamilton to be finalized by the start of the regular season.

”We don’t want it to be a distraction,” Daniels said. ”We both agree, ‘Hey let’s do it right up until we report and after that let’s put it aside.” With Prince Fielder off the market, the Rangers front office is looking to get a long-term deal done with Hamilton, who is in the final year of a two-year, 24 million contract and is set to hit free agency after the 2012 season.
