Tigers manager Jim Leyland said that when Victor Martinez (knee) returns in 2013, he will bat fifth behind Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder.

If that will be the setup next season, then it stands to reason Miggy will hit third and Prince fourth this year, which was the most likely scenario. Fielder will be in line for a nice RBI total, while Cabrera’s run total will be lofty and he could also see more pitches to hit.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Dodgers made a “major push” for Prince Fielder before he signed his nine-year, $214 million contract with the Tigers.

The Dodgers’ offer was for seven guaranteed years at around $160 million and included an opt-out after four seasons. He would have made around $26 million annually over the first four years of the deal and something in the low $20 million range for the final three years. It sounds like things got pretty close, as the Dodgers and Fielder even met at an “undisclosed neutral location” a few weeks ago. We may have had a very different ending here if Victor Martinez’s knee injury didn’t push the Tigers into the bidding.

Tigers signed 1B Prince Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million contract.

Fielder will be officially introduced as a member of the Tigers during a press conference on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET. The contract is the fourth-richest in baseball history and runs through 2020. Fielder will make $23 million in each of the next two seasons and $24 million per season over the final seven years of the contract. Some have questioned the logic of giving a long-term deal to someone with Fielder’s unique physique, but the 27-year-old has a .929 career OPS and has appeared in at least 157 games in each of his six full seasons in the majors. Fielder’s arrival is expected to push Miguel Cabrera back to third base, which could give the Tigers one of the worst infield defenses in recent memory, but the middle of their lineup will be positively scary.

Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM reports that Prince Fielder’s nine-year, $214 million contract does not include an opt-out.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com has reported the same information. Some thought an opt-out would be included so that Fielder could test the market or renegotiate a longer contract in a couple years (ala C.C. Sabathia or Alex Rodriguez), but he and his agent Scott Boras appear content with the fourth-richest contract in baseball history.

According to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, Prince Fielder will be the Tigers’ starting first baseman.

That means that Miguel Cabrera is going to have to change roles, moving either to third base or left field. Fielder has never been a great defensive first baseman, but likely asked if he could remain at the position when agreeing to his nine-year, $214 million contract. He’ll surely DH near the end of the deal.

CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports that the Tigers have signed Prince Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million deal.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports first mentioned the possibility less than 10 minutes ago, and now it has become official: Fielder is going to Detroit, the same place his father Cecil spent seven years of his career. The 27-year-old slugger should shine bright for the Tigers, more than making up for the production lost by Victor Martinez’s knee injury in 2012 and helping the team remain in the rung of American League contenders for years to come. Fielder owns a .929 career OPS. He batted .299/.415/.566 with 38 home runs and 120 RBI in 162 games last season for the Brewers.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that Prince Fielder is close to a nine-year deal with the Tigers.

A shocking, under-the-radar play by Detroit. At last check, the Nationals were the only team still involved in the Fielder sweepstakes and weren’t willing to go beyond seven years. But you can never count out super agent Scott Boras. More information should pour in throughout the afternoon and evening. Fielder will presumably DH for the Tigers, filling the immediate vacancy left by Victor Martinez’s ACL injury.

FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports that the Orioles and Marlins are “not in the mix” for Prince Fielder.

The Marlins have been out for a while, and the Orioles were unable to pull together enough funds to be competitive in the bidding process. The Rangers are also out of the mix, leaving the Nationals as the likeliest landing spot. Fielder is expected to make a decision very soon. The 27-year-old first baseman owns a .929 career OPS and batted .299/.415/.566 with 38 home runs and 120 RBI in 162 games last season for the Brewers.
