Michael McKenry (Pirates)

5/15/12 10:05 pm

Michael McKenry connected on his second home run of the season on Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Marlins.

He finished the night 1-for-3 with that solo blast off of Josh Johnson in the seventh inning. He’s only hitting .195 with a pair of homers and RBI on the season, and isn’t relevant in any fantasy leagues.

Kevin Correia (Pirates)

5/15/12 10:02 pm

Kevin Correia had a night to forget against the Marlins on Tuesday, giving up six runs on eight hits in just 3 2/3 innings of work.

He walked four and struck out one in the game. Since he doesn’t have overpowering stuff, he needs to rely on his pinpoint control to have success, and he simply didn’t have it on Tuesday. Seven of the first eight Marlins hitters reached to start the fourth inning, pushing five runs across and chasing Correia from the game. With the loss, he drops to 1-4 on the season and raises his ERA to 4.50. He’ll attempt to get back on track when he takes on the Tigers in Detroit on Sunday.

Jeff Karstens (Pirates)

5/15/12 7:16 pm

Jeff Karstens (shoulder) will throw a one-inning simulated game Wednesday.

“I want to see a little more intensity from him in the ‘sim? game,” Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage said. “Then, I want to see how he bounces back from that on Friday in a side session.” Karstens could begin a rehab stint next week with Double-A Altoona and figures to be ready to rejoin the Pirates no later than early June if all goes well.

Brad Lincoln (Pirates)

5/14/12 9:04 pm

Brad Lincoln pitched well in a spot start Monday, limiting the Marlins to two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings in the 3-2 win.

Lincoln struck out three and was taken deep on a solo shot by Hanley Ramirez. It’s a nice effort from the right-hander, but he’s headed back to the bullpen with Erik Bedard (back) slated to rejoin the rotation Wednesday. He sports a 1.33 ERA and 0.98 WHIP over 20 1/3 innings.

Rod Barajas (Pirates)

5/14/12 9:02 pm

Rod Barajas doubled and belted a solo homer in Monday’s one-run win over the Marlins.

Barajas’ .182 average to this point is no surprise, and tonight’s bomb was just his second of the season. They’ve both been big, though, as his first one was a walk-off shot. Still, he’s a weak option as a second catcher in mixed leagues.

A.J. Burnett (Pirates)

5/13/12 5:14 pm

A.J. Burnett took a no-decision in Sunday’s 3-2, 12-inning win over the Astros, allowing just two runs on six hits in eight innings.

Burnett struck out four and walked none. The eight-inning start was Burnett’s second straight since he was embarrassed to the tune of 12 runs in just 2 2/3 innings against the Cardinals on May 2. Owners should be cautiously optimistic about his status in deeper mixed leagues. He’ll get the Tigers in Detroit on Friday.

Neil Walker (Pirates)

5/13/12 5:07 pm

Neil Walker doubled twice and scored a run in Sunday’s 3-2, 12-inning win over the Astros.

The extra-base hits were Walker’s first in five games, while the two-hit day was his first since May 5 (seven games). Walker has just one home run and 12 RBI, but is holding down the fort with a .278/.331/.348 triple slash. He should finish the year with 10-12 bombs and a line close to .270/.340/.400.

Daniel McCutchen (Pirates)

5/13/12 11:09 am

Pirates placed RHP Daniel McCutchen on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain.

He suffered the injury while taking batting practice Saturday. McCutchen didn’t appear in any games for the Bucs during his short stay and now will likely be sidelined into June.

Joel Hanrahan (Pirates)

5/13/12 11:07 am

Pirates activated RHP Joel Hanrahan from the bereavement list.

He was away from the team for a couple days while attending his grandmother’s funeral, but Hanrahan is ready to resume his ninth inning role.

Juan Cruz (Pirates)

5/12/12 9:52 pm

With Joel Hanrahan on paternity leave, Juan Cruz stepped in against the Astros on Saturday and picked up his third save of the season.

While Hanrahan has been relatively solid this year, Cruz has proven to be a capable alternative. And he would become a must-add if Hanrahan is sidelined for an extended period of time. Cruz could also happen into a fantasy-relevant role if he’s moved at the trade deadline.
