Pirates

Clint Barmes (Pirates)

5/21/12 9:13 pm

Clint Barmes went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and a go-ahead sacrifice fly in a 5-4 win over the Mets on Monday night.

Barmes knocked in Neil Walker in the bottom of the eighth to put the Pirates in front. Walker made his way to third after Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Mike Baxter miscommunicated on a ball in left center field which fell for an error. It was Barmes’ seventh RBI of the season and his first since May 12. He’s only an option in deeper NL-only leagues right now.

Erik Bedard (Pirates)

5/21/12 9:12 pm

Erik Bedard gave up four runs over five innings Monday in a no-decision against the Mets.

Bedard allowed six hits and three walks while striking out three. It was the fourth time in his past five starts that he has failed to complete six innings, including when he left a start with back spasms on May 9. He’ll carry a 3.52 ERA into a start against the Cubs this weekend.

Jeff Karstens (Pirates)

5/21/12 6:56 pm

Jeff Karstens (shoulder) threw three scoreless innings on two hits while striking out one in his first rehab start at Double-A Altoona Monday.

It’s a good start, but Karstens will need at least a couple more outings before rejoining the Pirates rotation. We could see him in early June if all goes well.

Garrett Jones (Pirates)

5/21/12 9:50 am

Garrett Jones doubled in Sunday’s loss to the Tigers.

Jones has six doubles, four home runs and 25 strikeouts in 95 plate appearances this season, and is sporting a rough .231/.253/.429 batting line. He has some pop still, but the 31-year-old first baseman and outfielder is a fringe fantasy option in standard mixed leagues.

Drew Sutton (Pirates)

5/20/12 5:08 pm

Pirates acquired INF-OF Drew Sutton from the Braves for cash considerations; assigned him to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Sutton, who signed a minor league deal with Atlanta in November, flashed potential last year with the Red Sox, batting .315/.362/.444 in 60 plate appearances. The 29-year-old journeyman hit .270/.374/.372 in 38 games at Triple-A Gwinnett this year. He’ll likely serve as a backup infielder in Indy.

Kevin Correia (Pirates)

5/20/12 3:11 pm

Kevin Correia allowed three runs on four hits in six innings of work on Sunday, taking the loss in Pittsburgh’s 4-3 setback in Detroit.

Correia struck out two and walked none in falling to 1-5. Correia actually came out for the seventh inning, but was yanked after allowing back-to-back hits to start things off. Now the owner of a 4.50 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and pathetic 16/15 K/BB ratio, Correia will get the Cubs at home next weekend.

Rod Barajas (Pirates)

5/20/12 3:05 pm

Rod Barajas hit a solo home run in Sunday’s loss to the Tigers.

Pittsburgh’s catcher added a second RBI with a ninth-inning sacrifice fly. Barajas’ fifth-inning blast off of Max Scherzer was his fourth of the season. Batting just .220/.265/.407, he should remain quarantined to NL-only leagues and deeper mixed formats.

Jeff Locke (Pirates)

5/20/12 8:49 am

Pirates recalled LHP Jeff Locke from Triple-A Indianapolis.

He’ll provide an extra bullpen arm for a few days while Jason Grilli is on the bereavement list. Locke boasts a 3.02 ERA and 36/10 K/BB ratio over 47 2/3 innings at Indy this season.

Jason Grilli (Pirates)

5/20/12 8:48 am

Pirates placed RHP Jason Grilli on the bereavement list.

Grilli’s wife’s grandfather passed away, and he’ll be away from the team for at least three days. Jeff Locke has taken his spot on the roster.

Jeff Karstens (Pirates)

5/19/12 2:12 pm

Jeff Karstens (shoulder) is scheduled to begin his rehab assignment Monday with Double-A Altoona.

He’ll throw no more than 45 pitches, or three innings. Karstens has been on the disabled list since April 18 with right shoulder inflammation. He could to be ready to rejoin the Pirates in early June if all goes well.
