James Darnell (Padres)

5/17/12 10:51 pm

James Darnell exited Thursday’s game against the Dodgers in the top of the sixth inning with an apparent injury to his left arm.

Darnell suffered the injury while attempting to make a diving catch. The exact nature of the injury isn’t yet clear, but we’ll pass along an update as soon as it is made available by the team. Chris Denorfia replaced him in left field.

Huston Street (Padres)

5/17/12 8:12 pm

Huston Street (lat) is expected to start throwing soon.

Street landed on the disabled list earlier this month with a right lat strain. There’s no clear timetable for his return. Dale Thayer will continue to hold down the closer role for now.

Everth Cabrera (Padres)

5/17/12 3:57 pm

Padres recalled SS Everth Cabrera from Triple-A Tucson.

He’ll take the place of the injured Jason Bartlett (knee) on the active roster and will be half of the Padres’ new double play combination along with Alexi Amarista. Cabrera, now 25, was hitting .333/.389/.410 with nine doubles, one triple, 15 RBI and 15 stolen bases over his first 34 games at the Triple-A level this year. The organization is clearly looking to the future, so Cabrera should get plenty of playing time for now. Don’t expect much power, but his speed makes him a worthy target in NL-only and some deeper mixed formats with a MI (middle infielder) spot.

Jason Bartlett (Padres)

5/17/12 3:54 pm

Padres placed SS Jason Bartlett on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 15, with a strained right knee.

After releasing Orlando Hudson, here’s the other part of the Padres’ middle infield overhaul. Barlett is hitting just .133/.240/.193 over his first 29 games this season, so it’s probably only a matter of time before he’s also shown the door. Everth Cabrera has been recalled from Triple-A Tucson and figures to get most of the playing time at shortstop for now.

Alexi Amarista (Padres)

5/17/12 3:48 pm

Padres recalled INF Alexi Amarista from Triple-A Tucson.

Amarista, who was recently acquired from the Angels in the Ernesto Fieri deal, figures to get a chance to take over starting second base duties from the released Orlando Hudson. The 23-year-old may eventually end up as a utility man, but he has some speed and a .312/.368/.439 batting line over parts of six seasons in the minors. Give him a shot in NL-only formats.

Orlando Hudson (Padres)

5/17/12 3:44 pm

Padres released 2B Orlando Hudson.

ESPN’s Keith Law first reported that Hudson was designated for assignment, but the Padres have actually requested release waivers, which is a mere formality before he can sign with any team. The 34-year-old was a massive disappointment during his time in San Diego, batting just .238/.313/.344 with a .657 OPS over 585 plate appearances. However, we’re sure somebody will take a chance on him at the major league minimum. Alexi Amarista has been called up from Triple-A and should get most of the playing time at second base moving forward.

Orlando Hudson (Padres)

5/17/12 3:28 pm

Keith Law of ESPN.com reports that the Padres have designated Orlando Hudson for assignment.

The Padres have yet to make an official announcement, but the writing has been on the wall for a while now. Hudson has batted just .238/.313/.344 since joining the Padres and the recently-acquired Alexi Amarista lingers as an alternative in the minor leagues. The Padres would still be responsible for the remainder of Hudson’s $5.5 million salary this year and his $2 million buyout in 2013, so the 34-year-old shouldn’t have any trouble drawing interest at the major league minimum. Stay tuned.

Brian Tallet (Padres)

5/17/12 2:34 pm

Padres released LHP Brian Tallet.

Tallet surrendered a whopping 22 hits, 10 walks and 15 earned runs in 16 innings at Triple-A Tucson. He’s a lefty, though, so he should be able to land another gig.

Eric Stults (Padres)

5/17/12 2:15 pm

Padres claimed LHP Eric Stults off waivers from the White Sox.

Stults was designated for assignment by Chicago earlier this week after allowing six hits, two walks and four earned runs in 6 2/3 innings. He is 32 years old and doubtful to suddenly find success with San Diego.

Jedd Gyorko (Padres)

5/17/12 7:50 am

Padres prospect Jedd Gyorko has been promoted from Double-A San Antonio to Triple-A Tucson.

The 23-year-old second baseman was batting .262/.356/.431 with six home runs and 17 RBI in 149 plate appearances this season at the Double-A level. The Padres clearly have Gyorko on a fast-track and could allow him to jump all the way to the major leagues by season’s end. He was a second-round draft pick in 2010.
