Ryan Mattheus (Nationals)

5/21/12 9:57 pm

X-rays on Ryan Mattheus’ left foot came back negative.

Mattheus is currently dealing with plantar fasciitis and is scheduled to see a specialist Tuesday in Baltimore. The Nationals will likely wait before making any decision about a possible stint on the disabled list.

Henry Rodriguez (Nationals)

5/21/12 9:28 pm

Nationals manager Davey Johnson indicated Monday that he is considering using a closer-by-committee moving forward.

Johnson has stood behind Henry Rodriguez throughout his recent struggles, but he’s on the verge of making a change after pulling him from a save opportunity Monday night against the Phillies. “I’m going to sleep on it, but I’m looking at other alternatives,” said Johnson. We still think Rodriguez will get some chances, but Craig Stammen, Sean Burnett and Tyler Clippard will also be thrown into the mix. It’s not an ideal situation for fantasy owners.

Gio Gonzalez (Nationals)

5/21/12 9:08 pm

Gio Gonzalez was terrific again Monday, whiffing nine batters over six shutout innings in a 2-1 win over the Phillies.

He gave up just three hits and walked three. Gonzalez now leads all of baseball with 69 strikeouts over 54 2/3 innings this season, as he passed up Justin Verlander tonight. He?ll carry a nifty 1.98 ERA and 0.99 WHIP into this weekend’s start in Atlanta.

Henry Rodriguez (Nationals)

5/21/12 9:07 pm

Henry Rodriguez was pulled from a save chance Monday against the Phillies after recording just one out.

Rodriguez entered the ninth with a 2-0 lead but exited after a walk, single and a couple wild pitches. Sean Burnett came on and allowed a sac fly and then a line out sandwiched around a walk to nail down the win. Nats manager Davey Johnson has committed to Rodriguez in the past, but he’s probably got to make a change in the ninth inning at this point.

Ian Desmond (Nationals)

5/21/12 9:02 pm

Ian Desmond singled in a run and launched a solo homer in Monday’s win over the Phillies.

Desmond drove in both Nationals runs in the one-run victory. He’s now tied for the team lead with his seven longballs, putting him just three short of his career high. Desmond has now driven in 20 runs, and it appears that he’ll remain in a run-producing spot in the middle of the lineup while he’s hot.

Michael Morse (Nationals)

5/21/12 4:42 pm

Michael Morse (lat) traveled to the Nationals’ complex in Viera, Florida on Monday to continue his rehab process.

Morse recently began baseball activities after being shut down in April with a torn right lat muscle. He’s scheduled to hit on Tuesday and could soon begin playing in extended spring training games. If all goes well, he could be activated from the disabled list in the first week of June.

Ryan Mattheus (Nationals)

5/21/12 4:27 pm

Ryan Mattheus is scheduled to get X-rays on his left foot Monday in Philadelphia.

Mattheus has felt something for the past few weeks and may have aggravated it in Monday. The Nats are hoping it’s plantar fasciitis, but we should know more after he sees a specialist in Baltimore on Tuesday. Chien-Ming Wang could replace him on the active roster if he requires a stint on the disabled list.

Stephen Strasburg (biceps tightness) will make his next scheduled start Saturday against the Braves.

Strasburg left Sunday’s start against the Orioles with biceps tightness, but it’s not a major concern. No MRI was required and he was out on the field Monday throwing a frisbee with teammates.

Brad Lidge (Nationals)

5/21/12 3:02 pm

Brad Lidge is slated to throw a bullpen session Wednesday for the first time since undergoing hernia surgery on May 1.

If all goes well, he’ll head to the team’s complex in Viera, Florida on Thursday to ramp up the rehab process. He’s currently aiming to rejoin the Nats’ bullpen on June 15.

Stephen Strasburg left Sunday’s win against the Orioles after five innings due to biceps tightness.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson didn’t appear concerned about the injury and said Strasburg should make his next start. Because of the phenom’s injury history, Washington understandably used caution when Strasburg mentioned arm fatigue. “The bicep is fine,” Strasburg said. “Starting out, I threw a lot of pitches early and then we put up a lot of runs. I got a little tired. [The bicep] got a little tight. It’s nothing different than any other outing. It’s probably gonna be like this for the rest of the year. It’s all part of coming back from Tommy John [surgery]. It’s something I have to be smart about.” Strasburg held Baltimore to three runs — one earned — and struck out eight while hitting his first career home run.
