Mike Cameron has decided to retire from baseball.

It’s an abrupt decision, but not altogether surprising when you think about it. Cameron, 39, was on a minor league deal with the Nats, and with Rick Ankiel and Roger Bernadina also around and Bryce Harper likely to be ready sometime in the first half, the veteran probably didn’t see much of an opportunity. Cameron finishes his 17-year career with a .249/.338/.444 batting line, 278 homers and 297 steals to go along with three Gold Gloves and one All-Star game appearance.

Nationals signed OF Mike Cameron to a minor league contract.

The deal also includes a spring training invite. Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio hears that he’ll earn $1 million if he makes the Opening Day roster, while the contract includes $750,000 in performance-based incentives. Cameron, 38, batted .203/.285/.359 with nine home runs and 27 RBI over 269 plate appearances this past year between the Red Sox and Marlins. He’s better off as a fourth outfielder and right-handed bat off the bench at his advanced age, but his role for 2012 will likely hinge upon whether the Nationals think Bryce Harper is ready for the big leagues.

According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Nationals have reached a deal with outfielder Mike Cameron.

Cameron was said to be engaging in “serious talks” with the Indians over the weekend, but the Nationals apparently swooped in with a better offer. No word yet on the financial terms of the agreement. Cameron, 38, batted .203/.285/.359 with nine home runs and 27 RBI over 269 plate appearances this past year between Boston and Miami. He’ll function as depth for the Nats.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Indians are in “serious talks” with free agent outfielder Mike Cameron.

Terry Pluto of Cleveland Plain-Dealer and Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reported earlier that the Tribe had interest in the veteran outfielder, and it sounds like something could get done soon. Cameron, who turns 39 in January, batted just .203/.285/.359 with nine homers and 27 RBI over 269 plate appearances this past season, but he would fit the Indians’ need for a right-handed hitting outfielder.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Nationals are targeting free agent Mike Cameron for their bench.

Cameron, who turns 39 in January, batted just .203/.285/.359 with nine homers and 27 RBI over 269 plate appearances this past season. While he was released by the Marlins in September after his involvement in a verbal altercation with a flight attendant on a team charter flight, the veteran outfielder has a solid reputation as a teammate. The Nationals are also looking at Willie Harris, Mark DeRosa and Greg Dobbs for their bench.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that Mike Cameron intends to continue his playing career in 2012.

Cameron is coming off a terrible season where he batted just .203 over 237 at-bats for the Red Sox and Marlins. His year ended abruptly when he was let go by Florida reportedly after getting involved in a verbal altercation with a flight attendant on a team charter flight. But, the 38-year-old is generally viewed as a great teammate and wouldn’t be a bad bench player for someone.
