Melky Cabrera

Melky Cabrera (Giants)

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Friday that he’s going to look at Melky Cabrera in the leadoff spot.

Angel Pagan figures to be his primary competition. While Cabrera is coming off the better year, both players have a .333 career on-base percentage and Pagan has stolen at least 32 bases in each of the past two seasons. Bochy is also toying with the idea of using Cabrera in the third spot and sliding Pablo Sandoval down to fifth, but we hope it doesn’t come to that. As of now, Nate Schierholtz figures to start in one of the corner outfield spots while Aubrey Huff and Brandon Belt will compete for at-bats at first base.

The Giants and OF Melky Cabrera avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $6 million contract.

A nice (and well-deserved) raise for Melky. The 27-year-old batted .305/.339/.470 with 18 home runs and 20 stolen bases in 155 games last season for the Royals while earning $1.25 million. He’s expected to start in one of the corner outfield positions this year in San Francisco.

Giants acquired OF Melky Cabrera from the Royals for LHP Jonathan Sanchez and LHP Ryan Verdugo.

Cabrera, 27, batted .305/.339/.470 with 18 home runs and 20 stolen bases in 155 games this season and should provide a nice offensive boost to the San Francisco lineup. He doesn’t have great defensive range, so he’s not the best fit for the cavernous outfield at AT&T Park, but the Giants set out to improve their batting order this winter and they’ve done just that.
