Anibal Sanchez (Marlins)

2/4/12 4:05 pm

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel expects the arbitration decision for Anibal Sanchez to be pushed back until Monday.

The Marlins and Sanchez were roughly $1 million apart when arbitration figures were exchanged last month and remain unlikely to reach an extension. Eligible for free agency after this season, it’s looking like he’ll get an opportunity to test the free agent market next winter.

Marlins president David Samson said the team has no plans to offer Anibal Sanchez a contract extension.

Sanchez is arbitration-eligible for the final time this winter, and, unless talks start up during the season, it sounds like the Fish are prepared to let him test the free agent market. The right-hander’s arbitration hearing is scheduled for Friday, and he hopes to earn $8 million, with the Marlins offering $6.9 million. Sanchez posted a 3.67 ERA and a 202/64 K/BB ratio over 196 1/3 innings in 2011.

Hanley Ramirez (Marlins)

2/2/12 3:05 pm

Marlins president David Samson said Thursday that Hanley Ramirez (shoulder) is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

Ramirez underwent season-ending surgery on his left shoulder last September, but is feeling good taking batting practice in his native Dominican Republic. “Looks great, feels great, ready for Opening Day,” said Samson. “We think he’ll be ready to go (for the start of spring training). He is swinging a bat. He took some B.P. We’ll see what happens when he reports, but we feel pretty good.” Ramirez reportedly isn’t very comfortable about making the move to third base in order to accomodate Jose Reyes at shortstop, but it looks like he won’t have much of a choice. Assuming no setbacks with his shoulder, he makes for a fine bounceback option in fantasy leagues.

Marlins president David Samson said Thursday that Juan Carlos Oviedo will “probably not” start the season with the team.

Oviedo is currently working through legal issues in his native Dominican Republic after admitting to falsifying his identity last year. While Samson believes he will probably be in spring training, he mentioned that the 29-year-old right-hander could face disciplinary action from MLB because “there was an acknowledged violation of the law.” The Marlins and Oviedo avoided arbitration last month by agreeing to a one-year, $6 million contract, but he won’t be paid as long as he remains on the restricted list.

Josh Johnson (Marlins)

1/25/12 8:32 pm

Josh Johnson reported feeling “good” after throwing off a mound Tuesday for the first time since September.

Johnson will now begin throwing bullpen sessions a few times a week in anticipation of spring training. The right-hander made only nine starts in 2011 due to shoulder issues, but he has a sparkling 2.98 career ERA and is poised to enter the 2012 campaign with a clean bill of health. Johnson carries ace potential.

Austin Kearns (Marlins)

1/25/12 4:21 pm

Marlins signed OF Austin Kearns to a minor league contract.

The agreement carries an invitation to spring training, but Kearns seems highly unlikely to land a spot on the Marlins’ Opening Day roster. He was released by the Indians in August of last season after batting just .200/.302/.287 with two home runs and seven RBI over 174 plate appearances.

German Duran (Marlins)

1/24/12 11:29 pm

Marlins signed INF/OF German Duran to a minor league contract.

The deal includes a spring training invite. Duran, 27, played last season in independent ball and the Mexican League. He hasn’t played in the majors since 2008 as a member of the Rangers and should be considered a longshot to make the Opening Day roster.

Chris Coghlan (Marlins)

1/24/12 1:15 pm

Chris Coghlan had his left knee scoped in November.

Coghlan should be fine for spring training, but the scope took place on the same knee that he had surgically repaired in August of 2010. So there’s some concern that this has become a chronic issue. The 26-year-old center fielder has batted just .252/.318/.376 in the two seasons since he won the 2009 NL Rookie of the Year award.

Anibal Sanchez (Marlins)

1/24/12 12:13 am

The Marlins and Anibal Sanchez have an arbitration hearing scheduled for February 3.

Sanchez, who is arbitration-eligible for the final time this winter, requested $8 million and was offered $6.9 million from the Marlins when arbitration figures were exchanged last Tuesday. The Marlins are known as a “file-and-go team,” so the matter is expected to be resolved at the arbitration hearing.

Emilio Bonifacio (Marlins)

1/24/12 12:06 am

The Marlins and Emilio Bonifacio have an arbitration hearing scheduled for February 7.

Bonifacio requested $2.2 million and was offered $1.95 million from the Marlins when arbitration figures were exchanged last week. The Marlins have a policy to cease negotiations if no deal is reached before the deadline, so even though there’s a small gap between the two sides, Bonifacio’s salary will ultimately be in the hands of a three-person arbitration panel.
