Mark Buehrle (Marlins)

5/21/12 9:35 pm

Mark Buehrle settled in after a rough first inning to pick up his fourth win Monday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over 7 2/3 frames in a 7-4 victory over the Rockies.

Buehrle allowed all four runs and four of his five hits in the first inning but found his groove after that. He struck out just two and has only 31 punchouts over 61 2/3 innings this season, but he’s posted a 3.36 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. Buehrle gets the Giants this weekend.

Heath Bell (Marlins)

5/21/12 9:32 pm

Heath Bell pitched around an error to convert his sixth save of the season in Monday’s win over the Rockies.

Bell needed just 13 pitches to get through the inning despite an error behind him, as he got Troy Tulowitzki to ground into a double-play and Todd Helton to line out. He’s now converted three straight opportunities since regaining his closer job, but Bell is still not striking anyone out and is far from a safe bet in the ninth inning.

Giancarlo Stanton (Marlins)

5/21/12 9:27 pm

Giancarlo Stanton belted a grand slam in Monday’s comeback win over the Rockies.

The Rockies got out to a 4-0 first-inning lead, but the Marlins turned it on in the five-run fourth inning, capped off by the Stanton blast. The 22-year-old now has eight bombs this month after hitting just one out in April.

Josh Johnson (Marlins)

5/20/12 3:03 pm

Josh Johnson held the Indians to one run on five hits in seven innings of work on Sunday, improving to 2-3 in Miami’s 5-3 road victory.

Johnson struck out four and walked two in his third straight seven-inning quality start. After watching his ERA bottom out at 6.61 on May 4, Johnson is now the owner of a 4.82 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 42/17 K/BB ratio through 52 1/3 innings. Not the kind of numbers we’ve come to expect from Miami’s ace, but he’s clearly back on the right track. He has an excellent matchup lined up for Friday, where he’ll take on the Giants at home.

Logan Morrison (Marlins)

5/20/12 2:58 pm

Logan Morrison doubled, scored a run, plated a run and drew a walk in Sunday’s win over the Indians.

The two-bagger was just LoMo’s third of the season, while he entered this afternoon in an 0-for-13 rut. Set to serve as the Marlins’ first baseman for the foreseeable future following Saturday’s demotion of Gaby Sanchez, Morrison will bring a .250/.346/.352 triple slash into play on Monday.

Omar Infante (Marlins)

5/20/12 10:07 am

Omar Infante will return to his native Venezuela Sunday after the death of his grandfather.

The Marlins figure to place him on the bereavement list and call someone up. It’s not clear how many days Infante will be away.

Donovan Solano (Marlins)

5/20/12 8:24 am

Marlins purchased the contract of INF Donovan Solano from Triple-A New Orleans.

Solano nearly earned an Opening Day roster spot with a nice showing in spring training, but he hasn’t hit much at New Orleans, batting .262/.327/.326 with no homers and four steals. He’ll back up at multiple infield positions.

Emilio Bonifacio (Marlins)

5/20/12 8:21 am

Marlins placed OF Emilio Bonifacio on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 19, with a sprained left thumb.

It’s still not clear what the MRI results are, but obviously the injury is bad enough to keep Bonifacio out for at least a couple weeks. Chris Coghlan has been recalled, but Bryan Petersen figures to benefit the most in terms of increased playing time while Bonifacio is out.

Chris Coghlan (Marlins)

5/19/12 10:19 pm

Marlins recalled OF Chris Coghlan from Triple-A New Orleans.

He takes Gaby Sanchez’s spot on the 25-man roster. Coghlan was banished to the minors in late-April after hitting an anemic .121/.147/.152 through 35 plate appearances. He’s batted .275 at Triple-A. The 26-year-old center fielder entered 2012 having batted just .252/.318/.376 in the two seasons since he won the 2009 NL Rookie of the Year award. He’ll have a better shot at playing time if the Fish shift Logan Morrison to first base.

Gaby Sanchez (Marlins)

5/19/12 6:39 pm

Marlins optioned 1B Gaby Sanchez to Triple-A New Orleans.

Sanchez, an All-Star last year, was spectacular for the first few months of the 2011 season but he has been a well below average regular since then. He struggled over the spring and carried the offensive woes into the season, batting .197 with one homer before Miami sent him packing. Logan Morrison could be switched to first base, where his defense would at least be viable, while Sanchez works out his kinks on the farm. Miami must be kicking themselves for not selling high on Sanchez over the winter.
