Felix Hernandez (Mariners)

5/16/12 9:23 pm

Felix Hernandez had one of the worst starts of his career in Wednesday’s loss to the Indians, allowing eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits in just 3 2/3 innings of work.

The King notched only three strikeouts while handing out three free passes. The eight runs allowed were his most since May 7, 2010, where he allowed eight to the Angels. He’s now allowed 12 runs (10 earned) in his past 10 1/3 innings, ballooning his ERA from 1.89 to 3.02. He won’t have an easy time bouncing back Monday, where the hot-hitting Rangers will roll into Seattle.

Dustin Ackley (Mariners)

5/16/12 9:18 pm

Dustin Ackley went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday’s loss to the Indians.

The three-hit night prolongs Ackley’s hitting streak to 12 games, though he’s posted just two multi-hit efforts along the way. The home run was his third, and only his second since the Mariners’ season opener in Japan. Seattle’s leadoff hitter will bring a .262/.325/.383 triple slash into play on Thursday.

Mike Carp (Mariners)

5/16/12 6:49 pm

Mike Carp was scratched from Wednesday’s lineup with a stiff right shoulder.

The move is considered precautionary, and Carp should be available off the bench. Chone Figgins took his spot in left field.

Blake Beavan (Mariners)

Blake Beavan returned to action on Tuesday May 15.

Blake Beavan (Mariners)

5/15/12 6:07 pm

Blake Beavan was lifted after allowing three runs in four innings Tuesday versus the Red Sox.

Beavan was pitching on seven days’ rest after leaving his last start with an elbow contusion. He’ll face the Rockies in Colorado next time out, making him a poor play in AL-only leagues.

Franklin Gutierrez is currently undergoing treatment for the plantar fasciitis in his heel and will not run for nearly two weeks.

Gutierrez began the season on the disabled list with a torn pectoral muscle, but the heel injury is the bigger issue right now. Mariners manager Eric Wedge estimates that a return in late June is the “best-case scenario.” Michael Saunders will continue to play center field during his absence.

Jason Vargas (Mariners)

5/14/12 8:45 pm

Jason Vargas was unable to hold the Red Sox down Monday, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks over six innings in the loss.

He served up a couple homers in the fourth inning and also allowed a pair of doubles on the night. Vargas had been on quite a roll, but it wasn’t hard to see him struggling in this one in Boston. He’ll take a 3.28 ERA and 1.04 WHIP into a tough matchup in Colorado this weekend.

Kevin Millwood (Mariners)

5/13/12 3:27 pm

Kevin Millwood out-dueled Andy Pettitte in a Mother’s Day battle of aging hurlers, holding the Yankees to just one run on three hits in seven innings of Seattle’s 6-2 victory in Yankee Stadium.

He struck out six and walked four. Today was just the second time in seven outings that Millwood was able to complete seven innings of work, while it was the first time since April 11 he allowed fewer than three runs. Now 1-4 with a 5.09 ERA, he’ll bring a 1.60 WHIP and 28/19 K/BB ratio into his Friday outing in Colorado. Keep him benched for that one.

Justin Smoak (Mariners)

5/13/12 3:19 pm

Justin Smoak went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday’s win over the Yankees.

Smoak welcomed Andy Pettitte back to the big leagues with a fourth-inning bomb, which broke up an early-going no-hitter. Smoak’s fourth bomb of the season was his first in 14 games, while the multi-hit effort was just his second in 12 May contests. He remains a mixed-league no-go for the time being.

Mike Carp (Mariners)

5/12/12 5:45 pm

Mike Carp blasted his second homer of the season on Saturday, but it was all the offense that the Mariners could muster in a loss to the Yankees.

Carp finished the day 2-for-4 with a solo blast off Phil Hughes in the seventh inning and an RBI single in the ninth. He’s struggled since returning from the disabled list, hitting just .167 (5-for-30) with two homers and seven RBI through 11 games. But perhaps he’s ready to start roaring.
