Kevin Millwood (Mariners)

2/3/13 9:09 am

Kevin Millwood has announced his retirement from baseball.

Millwood, 38, wanted to catch on with the Braves or Rays, teams that are close to his Gainesville, Georgia home, but after that didn’t happen he’s decided to hang it up. “I feel like I can still throw it well and going out on a high note is a big deal,” Millwood said. “I just felt it was time to be closer to home and to be around the kids more often.” Millwood retires with 169 wins, a 4.11 ERA, one All-Star game appearance and one ERA title after 16 seasons.

Miguel Olivo (Mariners)

2/1/13 1:18 pm

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Reds are close to signing Miguel Olivo.

Heyman says Olivo also received interest from the Phillies, Astros and Dodgers, but the Reds are “finalizing” a deal for the catcher. With Olivo on board, that presumably means Devin Mesoraco will begin the season at Triple-A. Olivo, 34, has some pop but batted just .222/.239/.381 with 12 home runs and a .620 OPS in 87 games with the Mariners this past season.

Shawn Kelley (Mariners)

1/30/13 8:24 pm

Mariners and RHP Shawn Kelley avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $935,000 contract.

Kelley requested $1.2 million and the Mariners offered $750,000 when the two sides exchanged arbitration figures on January 18. Kelley posted a 3.25 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 45/15 K/BB ratio over 44 1/3 innings in 2012.

Felix Hernandez (Mariners)

1/26/13 4:47 pm

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that Felix Hernandez is in no hurry to work out a contract extension with the Mariners.

The Mariners are reportedly interested in adding four years onto the two remaining on Hernandez’ current deal, but King Felix is likely to be seeking an additional six years. He’s expressed a strong desire to remain a Mariner, but already among the game’s elite at 26-years-old, it’ll take a record contract for a pitcher to lock him up long term.

Brian Sweeney (Mariners)

1/25/13 10:36 am

Mariners re-signed RHP Brian Sweeney to a minor league contract.

Sweeney, 38, put up a 4.63 ERA over 95 1/3 frames at Triple-A for the Mariners last season. He hasn’t made it up to the big league since 2010 and is unlikely to do so in 2013.

Ronny Paulino (Mariners)

1/24/13 9:16 pm

Mariners signed C Ronny Paulino to a minor league contract.

He’s been given an invitation to spring training and should have a good shot at landing the backup job behind Jesus Montero. Paulino batted .254/.266/.302 with no homers over 20 games in 2012 with the Orioles and sports a .272/.324/.376 career batting line.

Justin Smoak (Mariners)

1/23/13 2:46 pm

Mariners manager Eric Wedge said Wednesday that he expects Justin Smoak to be his first baseman in 2013.

A vote of confidence for Smoak, who has a disappointing .227/.304/.382 batting line since coming over from the Rangers in the Cliff Lee deal. Assuming Smoak gets the chance to open the season at first base, Morales would presumably serve as the primary DH while Michael Morse would play left, Michael Saunders would play right and Raul Ibanez would be used in a part-time role. But the margin for error for Smoak just got a lot smaller.

Brendan Ryan (Mariners)

1/23/13 1:44 pm

Brendan Ryan (elbow) is expected to be 100 percent for spring training.

Ryan had surgery in October to remove loose bodies from his right elbow. The 30-year-old is one of the best fielding shortstops in the majors, but he batted just .194/.277/.278 last season. He can be ignored in fantasy leagues.

Dustin Ackley (Mariners)

1/23/13 1:40 pm

Mariners trainer Rick Griffin said that Dustin Ackley has no restrictions after having bone spurs removed from his left ankle in October.

Ackley had dealt with the nagging condition with college, so he finally decided to do something about it. The 24-year-old is coming off a disappointing sophomore campaign in which he batted just .226/.294/.328 with 12 homers and a .622 OPS.

Felix Hernandez (Mariners)

1/22/13 8:42 am

FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports that the Mariners continue to talk to Felix Hernandez about a contract extension and are “at least weighing” a four-year, $100 million offer.

It’s not known whether the Mariners have actually made such an offer, as one source described the two sides as “dancing” but not deeply engaged. Hernandez is under contract for two more years for a total of $39.5 million, so if the reported figure is accurate, the total outlay would be $139.5 million over six seasons. This would be in the neighborhood of recent contracts given to Zack Greinke ($147 million) and Cole Hamels ($144 million), so such an offer would serve as a solid starting point in negotiations.
