Mariners

Ichiro Suzuki (Mariners)

5/22/12 5:31 am

Ichiro Suzuki went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one runs scored in Monday’s win over the Rangers.

Facing fellow countryman Yu Darvish, Ichiro produced RBI knocks in the first and third innings. The veteran hitter is now batting 5-for-7 against Darvish. Ichiro’s overall numbers are still well below his career averages. But he has been consistently solid on a young and resurgent Mariners team.

Felix Hernandez (Mariners)

5/22/12 12:50 am

Felix Hernandez allowed one run in eight innings and struck out seven Monday in a victory over the Rangers.

Mitch Moreland homered and doubled off Hernandez, but the rest of the Rangers combined for four measly singles. It was a bounce-back effort for Felix, who gave up 12 runs — 10 earned — in losing his previous two starts. He’s allowed one run or fewer in five of his 10 starts this season and is 4-3 with a 2.80 ERA overall.

Blake Beavan (Mariners)

5/20/12 5:31 pm

Blake Beavan held the Rockies to two runs on seven hits in five innings of Sunday’s 6-4 win.

Beavan struck out seven and walked one in improving to 2-4. A nice day, though Beavan has now gone five straight outings without producing a quality start. The owner of a 4.46 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 25/7 K/BB ratio through 42 1/3 innings, he’s off the radar in mixed leagues.

Justin Smoak (Mariners)

5/20/12 5:25 pm

Justin Smoak went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Sunday’s win over the Rockies.

The Mariners completed a three-game road sweep with the victory. As for Smoak, the multi-hit effort was his fifth in nine games, helping him raise his triple slash from .173/.229/.264 on May 9 to .218/.258/.333. It’s at least a start down the road toward mixed-league respectability.

Kyle Seager (Mariners)

5/19/12 7:30 pm

Kyle Seager went 3-for-4 with a walk, a homer and three RBI in Saturday’s win over the Rockies.

Seager had zero multi-hit games between May 8-17, but he’s now gone 5-for-7 with a walk, a home run and five RBI over two games against the Rockies. The 24-year-old seems to like Coors a heckuva lot more than SAFECO. Unfortunately, he only has one more contest in the thin air.

Jason Vargas (Mariners)

5/19/12 7:27 pm

Jason Vargas was good enough in Saturday’s win against the Rockies, allowing three runs on five hits and one walks in seven innings of work.

Not bad for a tough matchup in Coors. He struck out one and served up a two-run homer to Wilin Rosario. Vargas improved to 5-3 with a 3.34 ERA and 1.02 WHIP.

Miguel Olivo (Mariners)

5/19/12 1:49 pm

Miguel Olivo (groin) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Monday.

The Mariners’ current plan calls for Olivo to catch Monday, DH Tuesday, and possibly rejoin the team on Thursday. The 33-year-old catcher has been on the disabled list since May 1 with a right groin strain. He was batting just .210/.229/.346 in 23 games prior to the injury.

Jesus Montero (Mariners)

5/19/12 12:39 pm

Jesus Montero returned to the Mariners’ lineup Saturday.

Montero had missed the previous two games with the DH spot unavailable this weekend. He’ll start behind the plate for Jason Vargas and bat clean-up.

Kevin Millwood (Mariners)

5/18/12 10:20 pm

Kevin Millwood tossed his first complete game in nearly nine years as part of a 4-0 win over the Rockies on Friday night.

Millwood, who made nine starts for the Rockies last year, gave up just two singles while striking out seven and walking one. It was the sixth complete game shutout of his career and his first since August 1, 2003. The 37-year-old right-hander now owns a 4.17 ERA through his first eight starts this season. We’d steer clear of him in all fantasy leagues with a start against the Rangers on tap next week.

Kyle Seager (Mariners)

5/18/12 10:19 pm

Kyle Seager went 2-for-3 with two RBI in Friday’s win over the Rockies.

Seager had an RBI single in the first and later knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. He also came around to score in the ninth after reaching on a triple. It was Seager’s first multi-hit game since May 8. While the 24-year-old has a decent .278 batting average, he has only walked three times all season.
