Yankees transferred RHP Mariano Rivera from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

It clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Andy Pettitte. Rivera is out for the season with a torn meniscus and ACL in his right knee.

Mariano Rivera explained Wednesday afternoon that the reported “complication” involving his injured right knee was actually a blood clot in his right calf.

So that’s settled after a few days of mysterious reports. Rivera has been taking blood thinners and should ultimately be unaffected by the clot. He’s expected to undergo surgery at some point soon to correct his torn right ACL. David Robertson has taken over ninth-inning duties in New York and should hold the job for the remainder of the 2012 campaign.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com hears that the “complication” involving Mariano Rivera (knee) is “minor” and it’s “something that he wants to reveal.”

Rivera’s agent mentioned that his client ran into “complications” during his doctor visit on Monday, but he declined to go into any specifics. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman later told reporters that it won’t have an impact on his ability to come back from a torn ACL in his right knee. Sounds like much ado about nothing.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the reported “complications” during Mariano Rivera’s doctor visit will have no bearing on his ability to come back from a torn ACL in his right knee.

Rivera’s agent, Fernando Cuza, told George A. King III of the New York Post that his client “ran into complications” during his doctor visit on Monday, but declined to go into any specifics. It’s possible that the surgery is just being delayed, but the Yankees have yet to provide an official update. Regardless, Rivera is expected to miss the rest of the season and intends to make a comeback in 2013.

Yankees placed RHP Mariano Rivera on the 15-day disabled list with a torn right meniscus and ACL.

The “15-day” designation is a pure formality, as Rivera has already been ruled out for the remainder of the season. He will likely be transferred to the 60-day disabled list the next time the Yankees need to clear a spot on their 40-man roster. Six-months shy of his 43rd birthday, Rivera has vowed to return in 2013. David Robertson is the heavy favorite to close in Rivera’s absence, but manager Joe Girardi has refused to rule out giving save opportunities to Rafael Soriano.

Mariano Rivera (knee) said he expects to be completely healed by 2013 spring training.

Rivera, 43 in November, has a torn ACL and meniscus in his right knee. But he’s committed to going through the long and painful rehab process. “I’m coming back. Write it down in big letters,” Rivera said Friday. David Robertson is expected to serve as the Yankees’ closer for the rest of 2012.

Mariano Rivera tore the meniscus in his right knee in addition to his ACL.

It’s a devastating injury for a 42-year-old. Rivera will almost certainly need season-ending surgery and his career is in jeopardy. When asked if he thought he could return, he tearfully said, “At this point, I don’t know.” David Robertson is expected to step in as the Yankees’ closer.

Bob Klapisch of the Bergen Record reports that the Yankees are still trying to determine whether Mariano Rivera has a torn meniscus.

The Yankees weren’t told by Kansas City doctors about a torn meniscus, but Rivera offered it to reporters after Thursday’s game. Either way, the torn ACL is the major injury, and one that is expected to be season-ending. David Robertson is expected to replace Mo in the ninth inning, though Rafael Soriano could also be considered.
