Rockies acquired INF Marco Scutaro from the Red Sox for RHP Clayton Mortensen.

A no-brainer move for the Rox. Scutaro is owed a salary of $6 million in 2012 and is set to hit the free agent market next fall, but the trade will be well worth it if he comes close to putting up the kind of numbers he’s registered in recent seasons with Boston. The 36-year-old batted .299/.358/.423 with seven home runs and 54 RBI in 445 plate appearances last year. He’ll start at second base in 2012 for Colorado.

ESPN’s Jim Bowden confirms that the Rockies have acquired Marco Scutaro from the Red Sox for Clayton Mortensen.

Mortensen has a poor 5.12 career ERA in the big leagues and turns 27 years old in April. But this trade wasn’t really about adding talent for Boston; it was about getting rid of Sctuaro’s $6 million salary for 2012 and directing some of that cash into a free agent starter. Scutaro, 36, will start at second base this year in Colorado. He batted .299/.358/.423 in 445 plate appearances last season. Mike Aviles and Nick Punto will presumably platoon at shortstop for the Red Sox until prospect Jose Iglesias is ready.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies are “finishing up” a trade for Marco Scutaro.

Scutaro will start at second base for the Rockies this season if the deal is able to be finalized, bringing an element of consistency to a position that has seen rapid in-season turnover in recent years. The 36-year-old batted .299/.358/.423 with seven home runs and 54 RBI in 445 plate appearances last season for the Red Sox while playing solid defense. He’s owed $6 million in 2012 and is set to hit the free agent market next winter. Boston will reportedly get Clayton Mortensen in return.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that trade talks between the Rockies and Red Sox regarding Marco Scutaro “are now fizzling.”

Well, that rumor died rather quickly. While Renck hears that the Rockies have indeed discussed a deal for Sctuaro, the Red Sox are understandably reluctant to agree to a trade because they aren’t comfortable with their alternatives at shortstop. So it goes.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post hears that the Rockies are close to acquiring Marco Scutaro from the Red Sox.

Very interesting. It would be a risky move from the Red Sox perspective, as they already traded Jed Lowrie to the Astros and their current alternatives for shortstop include Mike Aviles, Nick Punto and young Jose Iglesias, but it could also free up some salary to add a starting pitcher. As for the Rockies, they have been in search of an upgrade at second base all offseason. Scutaro, 36, .299/.358/.423 with seven home runs, 54 RBI and a .781 OPS in 2011. He is set to earn $6 million this season before hitting free agency.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Red Sox are expected to hang on to Marco Scutaro now that Jed Lowrie has been traded.

The Sox were shopping both infielders, but they’ll keep Scutaro as their starting shortstop now that Lowrie has landed in Houston. The 36-year-old will be backed up by Nick Punto and presumably will hand the shortstop job off to Jose Iglesias in 2013 after his contract expires.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Rockies, among other clubs, are interested in trading for Marco Scutaro.

With the Red Sox needing help in the outfield, the rotation and the back end of the bullpen, they’re looking to shed some payroll. Scutaro is an obvious candidate to be moved, as he’s set to earn $6 million in 2012 and the Sox already having Jed Lowrie on the roster and Jose Iglesias close to being ready. The veteran batted .299/.358/.423 in 445 plate appearances in 2011.
