Justin Verlander carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning Friday against the Pirates.

Verlander issued two walks to Neil Walker and Andrew McCuchen, but retired 18 straight at one point, and struck out 12 of a possible 30 batters. Of his 109 pitches, 76 were for strikes. Verlander would have become just the fifth pitcher since Nolan Ryan to have thrown two or more no-hitters in MLB history.

Justin Verlander had a callus develop on his thumb Sunday and crack open, but he doesn’t expect to miss his next start.

It began to bleed in the seventh inning, which forced an early exit. Verlander still allowed just one run on a pair of hits over seven frames against a depleted Oakland lineup. “We’ll just have to wait and see, but I don’t think it’s much of one,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said when asked how big a concern Verlander’s thumb is. “You can do miracles with that kind of stuff today. We’ll just have to wait and see. I’m not exactly sure how it’s happening.” Verlander was even more confident in his availability. “After getting up here after the game and kind of working on it a little bit, I think it’s going to be fine,” he said. In other words, nothing to see here.

Justin Verlander predictably dominated the Athletics Sunday, giving up just two hits and one run over seven innings.

Verlander couldn’t have asked for a better spot. He was in pitcher-friendly Oakland and facing a lineup that didn’t include Brandon Inge (groin), Kurt Suzuki (thumb), Yoenis Cespedes (hand), Kile Ka’aihue (hamstring) and Jemile Weeks (rest). Verlander struck out eight and his WHIP is now down to 0.87. He’ll get another soft matchup when he faces the Pirates next week.

Justin Verlander yielded three runs in six innings Tuesday in a victory over the Mariners.

This won’t go down as one of Verlander’s better outings of the season, but it was good enough. He needed 113 pitches to get through six innings against the weak Seattle lineup. He allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out six.

Justin Verlander pitched eight innings and allowed two runs Wednesday in a no-decision versus the Royals.

Run support wasn’t supposed to be an issue for Verlander, but this is the fifth time in six starts that the Tigers have scored three or fewer runs in his outing. That’s why he’s sporting a 2-1 record along with his 2.38 ERA.

Justin Verlander turned in one of his worst outings of the season against the Yankees on Friday, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits in six innings of work.

Verlander struck out four and didn’t walk a hitter in the game. Even with the struggles, he left the game with a 6-5 lead and in position to pick up his third victory.Alex Rodriguez and Russell Martin each took Verlander deep in this game to provide most of the damage. He remains one of the game’s truly elite hurlers and should bounce back nicely when he takes on the Royals next week.

Justin Verlander turned in another strong performance Saturday, limiting the Rays to just one run on four hits in six innings of work.

Verlander struck out eight and walked three in the game. He was forced to make a sixth-inning exit because of a pitch count of 114 but improved to 2-1 on the season and now owns a 2.01 ERA and an impressive 31/8 strikeout to walk ratio in 31 1/3 frames. He?ll look to continue his dominance when he takes on the Yankees in New York next week.

It took 131 pitches, but Justin Verlander completed Monday’s 3-2 win over the Royals, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out nine.

Verlander allowed an RBI infield single and then a walk and a hit by pitch to load the bases but then got Alex Gordon looking to close it out. It’s a little surprising that Tigers manager Jim Leyland let him go over 130 pitches this early, but Verlander was hitting 100 mph on the radar gun late (albeit on the notoriously hot radar gun in Kansas City). The reigning AL MVP boasts a 2.13 ERA and 0.71 WHIP on the year and now has his first victory. He’ll shoot for win No. 2 this weekend against the Rangers.

Justin Verlander took a stunning loss in Wednesday’s 4-2 setback against the Rays, allowing four ninth-inning runs as the Tigers blew a 2-0 lead.

Verlander, who allowed just one hit on 81 pitches through his first eight innings of work, was cruising toward his first shutout of the season before coming unraveled in the ninth. He bookended a Reid Brignac strikeout by allowing singles to Jeff Keppinger and Desmond Jennings. Next, he walked Carlos Pena to load the bases before surrendering an RBI single to Evan Longoria. He was then pulled for Daniel Schlereth, who retired 0-of-2 batters before closer Jose Valverde was summoned and cashed in Verlander’s final two baserunners. The implosion leaves Verlander with an 0-1 record despite the fact he’s allowed a run in just one of his 16 innings of work thus far this season. He’ll get the Royals in Kansas City his next time out.

Justin Verlander was denied a victory after shutting out the Red Sox for eight innings on Thursday.

Jose Valverde blew a 2-0 lead in the ninth after Verlander’s dominant performance. He allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out seven in the gem. This is a game he probably would have been given a chance to finish in June. On April 5, manager Jim Leyland decided that 105 pitches was enough.
