Justin Verlander was named the American League MVP by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Verlander was also named the 2011 American League Cy Young Award winner in a rare but deserved sweep of the top two offseason trophies. The 28-year-old right-hander posted a 24-2 record, 2.40 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 250/57 K/BB ratio in 251 innings this season for the American League Central champion Tigers. Jacoby Ellsbury finished second in the MVP balloting, Jose Bautista finished third and Curtis Granderson finished fourth. Oh, and Michael Young got a first-place vote.

The Major League Baseball Players Association has named Justin Verlander “Player of the Year.”

Given his 2.40 ERA, 250 strikeouts, and 24-5 regular season record, it is little surprise that he received the honor. More remarkable is that Verlander is only the second pitcher to win the award, which speaks volumes about his utter dominance over the league while playing only once every five days.
