Justin Upton hit a two-run homer off Rafael Betancourt in the top of the ninth to lead the Diamondbacks to a 9-7 win over the Rockies on Thursday.

Upton had previously walked three times in the game, and the homer was his first hit of the day. He had been 8-for-49 with one double and no homers since May 3. Upton was a trendy MVP pick entering the season, but he has a long way to go to get his numbers back to that level.

Justin Upton doubled home the Diamondbacks’ lone run in Sunday’s loss to the Mets.

The D-Backs entered the ninth with just three hits off of R.A. Dickey, but Dickey issued a leadoff walk to Gerardo Parra before Upton drove him home. The extra-base hit was Upton’s first in four games, though he has knocked in four runs in six May contests. Upton’s .242/.330/.385 triple slash has nowhere to go but up.

Justin Upton said he’s focusing on stealing more bases this season.

“I’m just having fun with it,” he said. “I was sitting around thinking one day, ‘Why can’t I run a little bit more?’ I’m just out there having fun with it. I’m not saying I’m going to steal 50 bases this year. Just kind of focusing in and taking advantaging of situations when I can.” We’re not expecting Upton to suddenly turn into a 40-steal threat, but he’s already 5-for-5 this season and has a good shot to surpass last year’s career-high total of 21.

Justin Upton connected on his third homer of the season Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough to top the Nationals.

Upton finished the night 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and his fifth stolen base of the season. He hit the solo blast off Edwin Jackson in the fourth inning to tie the game 1-1. While he started the season off slow, Upton appears to be coming around with two homers and five RBI in his last three games. He still looks capable of making a strong run at 30/30 this season.

Justin Upton went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, a stolen base and two runs scored in Monday’s win over the Marlins.

It was just his second home run of the season. Upton is off to a bit of a slow start offensively, an unfortunate by-product of a nagging thumb injury, but he has hit safely in six out of his last seven games. Assuming he stays healthy, we fully expect that the best is yet to come.

Justin Upton went 2-for-3 and hit his first homer Monday against the Phillies.

Nice to see Upton showing some power after missing time with a thumb injury. He had been without an RBI in 39 at-bats this season.

Justin Upton (thumb) is in the Diamondbacks lineup on Saturday, after missing the previous four with his thumb injury.

He returns to his familiar third slot in the batting order and apparently will not require a stint on the DL. Gerardo Parra gets the call in center field, while A.J. Pollock who had been filling in for Upton, returns to the bench.

Justin Upton (thumb) is not in Friday’s lineup against the Braves.

Upton hasn’t started since Monday due to a bone bruise in his left thumb. There’s no clear timetable for his return, but he said Thursday that his condition is improving a and that he’s “close.” For what it’s worth, it sounds like he’ll avoid the disabled list. Gerardo Parra will make the start in right field Friday while A.J. Pollock starts in center field.

Justin Upton (thumb) said Thursday that he feels like he’s “close” to returning to the lineup.

Upton missed his third straight game Thursday, but feels improvement in his thumb with the extended rest. “Every morning when I get up it’s a little better, which is a positive sign,” said Upton. “I don’t want to re-irritate it and have it come back. The good thing is that it’s getting better every day, so we’ll see how it is tomorrow.” Upton may not return to the lineup Friday, but he appears likely to avoid the disabled list at the very least.
