Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 11th save of the season in Thursday’s win over the Cubs.

Papelbon came in to get the final out after Jacob Diekman nearly lost a five-run lead in the ninth. He now has a 2.35 ERA and 18/4 K/BB ratio over 15 1/3 innings and is 11-for-12 in save chances.

Jonathan Papelbon is available for Monday’s game against the Astros.

Papelbon slipped on the mound Sunday and tweaked his back, but it isn’t serious enough to keep him from pitching. The $50 million man has a 2.57 ERA and 15/4 K/BB ratio over 14 innings this season and is 10-for-11 in save chances.

Jonathan Papelbon gave up a go-ahead three-run homer to Mets’ rookie Jordany Valdespin in the ninth inning of a tie game on Monday night.

A rare non-save situation for Papelbon, it was his first appearance since last Tuesday. The big blast was set up by a one-out walk by Ike Davis and a two-out double by Mike Nickeas. Papelbon entered Monday’s action with a scoreless streak of 10 innings, so he was due for an off-night. He remains an elite fantasy closer.

Jonathan Papelbon sent down the Cubs in order on Saturday to notch his seventh save of the season.

Papelbon struck out two in the one-inning outing. He remains one of the truly elite closers in the game, and appears to be well worth the high price that fantasy owners had to pay to acquire his services.

Jonathan Papelbon took the Phillies on a bumpy ride in the ninth inning Thursday, but managed to lock down his second save of the season.

Papelbon allowed singles to Logan Morrison and Omar Infante, putting the go-ahead run at the plate before getting John Buck to ground into a game-ending double play. Papelbon remains one of the most talented and secure closers in the game and should rack up plenty of saves pitching behind the vaunted Phillies’ rotation.

Jonathan Papelbon gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning Friday against the Yankees.

Curtis Granderson homered off him for two of the runs. Fortunately, Papelbon won’t be facing the Yankees quite so often in the regular season any longer. He was having a great spring up until tonight, allowing just one run in 10 innings.

Jonathan Papelbon’s new four-year, $50 million contract carries a $13 million vesting option for 2016.

If “Paps” finishes 55 games in 2015 or a total of 100 games between 2014 and 2015, the $13 million becomes guaranteed. Papelbon inked the big-money deal over the weekend and will open the 2012 season as Philadelphia’s ninth inning man. He should be a reliable closer for at least the next two years.

Jonathan Papelbon arrived in Philadelphia Sunday.

The 30-year-old right-hander signed a ridiculous four-year, $50 million contract with the Phillies this weekend, then told a local television station that it was never about the money. “That (contract) doesn’t really play a role,” Papelbon said. “The biggest thing that plays a role is the ability to come here and win. I’m extremely excited.” He should be a reliable closer for at least a couple more seasons.

According to wins above replacement, Jonathan Papelbon is the most valuable reliever over the last five seasons, with a 14.7 rating.

Papelbon’s four-year, $50-million deal will be the largest total package ever signed by a relief pitcher, with the previous high being a five-year, $47-million contract signed by B.J. Ryan in 2005. His departure leaves a big hole for the Red Sox to fill, though the club will receive a first-round pick as compensation from the Phillies. The 30-year-old right-hander posted a 2.94 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in 64 1/3 innings this season, converting 31 saves in 34 opportunities.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said Friday that they never made a formal contract offer to Jonathan Papelbon, who agreed to a four-year, $50 million deal with the Phillies.

It doesn’t matter much, anyway, as Cherington said he wouldn’t have offered four years at this point of the offseason given the other closer options available in free agency. We still expect they’ll sign someone, but Cherington said he isn’t against the idea of a closer competition during spring training. In that scenario, Daniel Bard and Bobby Jenks could be in the mix. It doesn’t appear that Alfredo Aceves will be an option, though, as the Red Sox have told him to come to spring training prepared to start.
