Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Jon Garland is no longer an option for the Indians after skipping his scheduled physical on Monday.

It was reported earlier this week that the Indians had signed Garland to a minor league contract, but he had to pass a physical in order for it to be official. Since he didn’t take one, he remains a free agent. The 32-year-old right-hander posted a 4.33 ERA over nine starts with the Dodgers in 2011 before undergoing season-ending rotator cuff surgery in July.

The Indians have not yet signed Jon Garland to a minor league contract, as had been previously reported.

The Indians are still working out contract details with Garland talks and his physical is not likely to take place Monday. This is not to say that a deal isn’t imminent, but clearly talks weren’t as far along as had been assumed last week. Once Garland is medically cleared, assuming he does indeed sign, he will be given an invitation to spring training, where the 32-year-old right-hander will compete for a spot at the back end of the Indians’ starting rotation. Garland registered a 4.33 ERA in nine starts last season for the Dodgers before undergoing rotator cuff surgery in July. He’s expected to be ready for the start of the 2012 campaign.

The deal is only pending a physical. Once Garland is medically cleared, he will also be given an invitation to spring training, where he will compete for a spot at the back end of the Indians’ starting rotation. Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that Jon Garland (shoulder) is recovering on schedule and could throw for teams this offseason, depending on demand.

Garland underwent rotator cuff surgery on his right shoulder in July, a procedure that typically knocks a player out of commission for at least a year or so, but it sounds like the 32-year-old has a shot to be ready for spring training. Even if he proves that his shoulder is sound, he’d likely have to settle for a one-year, incentive-laden contract.
