Red Sox released RHP John Maine.

The 32-year-old right-hander signed a minor league contract in January but never made it out of extended spring training. Maine posted an ugly 7.43 ERA over 11 starts with the Rockies’ Triple-A affiliate last season before leaving the team in June following more shoulder issues. He should be able to land a minor league contract from a new organization, but his odds of making it back to the big leagues are close to nonexistent.

He’ll also get an invite to spring training, where he’s expected to get a look as a reliever. The 30-year-old right-hander is a long shot to make the team.

According to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, free agent right-hander John Maine “feels healthy” and “will be looking for a team this winter.”

Maine posted a horrific 7.43 ERA and 2.07 WHIP across 11 starts at Triple-A Colorado Springs this season before a shoulder injury left him unable to pitch. He’s had the past several months to fully recover and should be able to land a minor league contract from a new organization this offseason. But it’s fair to say that his days as a reliable major league pitcher are far behind him.
