Javier Vazquez said Monday that he isn’t officially retired, but has no intention of pitching this season.
“I want to leave the door open in case I want to play, but right now I don?t see myself playing,” said Vazquez. “For me to be ready in July or sometime in the summer, I?d have to start throwing soon. Right now, I don?t have any desire.” Vazquez had a 1.92 ERA over his final 19 starts last season, but passed over the opportunity for a lucrative contract in order to spend time with his family. The 35-year-old right-hander hasn’t ruled out the possibility of pitching for his native Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic next year, but a comeback in MLB is unlikely.
