Travis Hafner (Indians)

5/16/12 9:20 pm

Travis Hafner homered, doubled and drove in three runs on Wednesday, leading the charge as Cleveland rocked Felix Hernandez and the Mariners.

The Tribe rocked King Felix for a surprising eight runs in only 3 2/3 innings. Hafner’s bomb came off of Hisashi Iwakuma in the sixth, however. The home run was just his fifth of the season, though three of those have come in May. He’s now batting .259/.397/.464 to go along with 12 extra-base hits and 19 RBI.

Rafael Perez (Indians)

5/16/12 7:34 pm

Rafael Perez (lat) threw a bullpen session on Wednesday.

The Indians haven’t provided a timetable for Perez, but he shouldn’t need more than a couple weeks if he doesn’t have a setback. He seems likely to go out on a rehab assignment.

Grady Sizemore (Indians)

5/16/12 7:32 pm

Grady Sizemore (back) took batting practice Wednesday for the first time since landing on the disabled list.

“He looked good for the first time,” Acta said. “He swung the bat good, but it’s just a start. We’re not going to rush anything. He’s going to continue his rehab, and I’m anticipating that he’s going to go on a rehab assignment where he’s going to have plenty of at-bats before he comes up here and plays.” Sizemore has been hitting, throwing and doing running and agility drills, but he’s not close to returning to the lineup. He’s hoping to be back before the end of June.

Jack Hannahan (Indians)

5/16/12 7:29 pm

The Indians are awaiting the results of an MRI on Jack Hannahan’s injured back.

Hannahan is sitting out for the third straight game Wednesday due to back tightness, with Jose Lopez again filling in for him. “We’ll have to wait until the image comes back,” manager Manny Acta said, “and see how he shows up [on Thursday].”

Josh Tomlin (Indians)

5/16/12 3:08 pm

Josh Tomlin is scheduled to undergo a second MRI on his right wrist Thursday.

Tomlin was placed on the disabled list over the weekend due to right wrist soreness. An initial MRI resulted in conflicting opinions, one suggesting that the problem is muscular while the other pointed toward tendinitis, so the Indians hope the second MRI will provide some clarity. The possibility of surgery isn’t yet on the table.

Dan Wheeler (Indians)

5/16/12 1:04 pm

Indians sent RHP Dan Wheeler outright to Triple-A Columbus.

Wheeler cleared waivers after being designated for assignment over the weekend. The 34-year-old right-hander was given the boot after posting an ugly 8.76 ERA and 2/7 K/BB ratio over 12 1/3 innings. He’ll look to improve at the minor league level.

Robinson Tejeda (Indians)

5/16/12 12:59 pm

Indians released RHP Robinson Tejeda.

Tejeda, who joined the Indians on a minor league deal in January, gave up two runs on three hits in one inning in his lone appearance with Triple-A Columbus back on April 7. He is currently nursing a shoulder injury.

Derek Lowe (Indians)

5/15/12 3:44 pm

Derek Lowe pitched his fourth career shutout — and first since 2005 — in the Indians’ 5-0 win over the Twins on Tuesday.

Lowe did it without striking out a batter. He’s the first pitcher since Scott Erickson on April 28, 2000 to pitch a shutout without recording a strikeout. Lowe is now 6-1 with a 2.05 ERA this season, though his WHIP is still mediocre at 1.44. For all of his success so far, he’s still not a very good bet in mixed leagues.

Shin-Soo Choo (Indians)

5/15/12 3:39 pm

Shin-Soo Choo homered, doubled and walked from the leadoff spot Tuesday versus the Twins.

Choo appears to be adjusting well to his new role. Of course, a big reason the Indians stuck him there is because he wasn’t hitting for power. If he finds his power stroke, he might be return to batting third sometime soon.

Jack Hannahan (Indians)

5/15/12 10:37 am

Jack Hannahan (back) is out of the Indians’ lineup for the second straight day Tuesday.

Hannahan is currently day-to-day with tightness in his lower back. Jose Lopez will make another start at the hot corner Tuesday.
