Fausto Carmona (Indians)

2/4/12 9:15 am

The consequences of Dominican ballplayers caught using a false identity include ”ineligibility to enter the United States for life,” according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

The Plain Dealer notes that comments made by consul general William Weissman Tuesday ”may have been premature” and the U.S. State Department has backtracked in regard to the cases of Fausto Carmona and Leo Nunez (Juan Carlos Oviedo). Both Carmona and Nunez are cooperating with the U.S government, but it is still unknown if they will be able to get a visa to enter the United States.

Asdrubal Cabrera (Indians)

2/3/12 12:20 pm

Nick Camino of WTAM 1100 in Cleveland reports that the Indians have a multi-year contract offer on the table to Asdrubal Cabrera.

It’s not clear how much it’s for, but Camino says the two sides could still end up just settling on a one-year pact. Cabrera is looking to cash in on a long-term deal after a breakout 2011 season where he batted .273/.332/.460 batting line with 25 homers, 92 RBI, 17 stolen bases and a .792 OPS. He’s under team control through 2013.

Asdrubal Cabrera (Indians)

2/3/12 10:12 am

Indians general manager Chris Antonetti revealed Friday that the team is negotiating a long-term extension with Asdrubal Cabrera.

Antonetti says any deal must align “in value and term.” It’s no surprise that Cabrera is looking to cash in on an extension following a career year, but it might be wise for the Indians to see what he does in 2012 before handing him a boatload of cash. The 26-year-old is in his second year of arbitration and requested $5.2 million and was offered $3.75 million from the Indians when figures were exchanged last month.

Matt LaPorta (Indians)

2/3/12 10:05 am

Indians general manager Chris Antonetti indicated Friday that Matt LaPorta is likely to begin the season at Triple-A.

The Tribe signed Casey Kotchman to be their regular first baseman, and they’d like to give LaPorta everyday at-bats. The former top prospect will compete for a bench role, but Antonetti thinks LaPorta would benefit from some more seasoning. With a career .313/.400/.553 batting line there, LaPorta has nothing left to prove at Triple-A. He might have run out of chances with the Indians, though.

Casey Kotchman (Indians)

2/3/12 8:31 am

Indians signed 1B Casey Kotchman to a one-year, $3 million contract.

The deal, which was reported Thursday and now become official, also includes some incentives. Kotchman, 28, posted a .306/.378/.422 slash line with 10 home runs and 48 RBI in 563 plate appearances last season for the Rays and offers a defensive upgrade for their groundball-heavy pitching staff. Matt LaPorta will be pushed to a backup role.

Rafael Perez (Indians)

2/2/12 10:38 am

Indians and LHP Rafael Perez avoided arbitration by agreeing on a one-year contract.

Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports that he’ll make $2,005,000 with the chance for an additional $25,000 with incentives. Perez requested $2.4 million and was offered $1.6 million from the Indians when arbitration figures were exchanged last month, so the two sides settled a little over the midpoint. The 29-year-old left-hander posted a 3.00 ERA and 33/19 K/BB ratio over 63 innings last season and will pitch in middle relief again in 2012.

Fausto Carmona (Indians)

Dominican Today reports that the U.S. State Department could pardon Dominican ballplayers who are caught using a false identity.”

“I cannot speak of a particular case because each case is different, but in the case of the ballplayers they could be pardoned,” said consul general William Weissman. It’s important to note that Weissman also feels that players who turn themselves in should face a different treatment than those who were caught. Of course, Indians right-hander Fausto Carmona (Roberto Hernandez Heredia) and Marlins’ right-hander Nunez (Juan Carlos Oviedo) didn’t turn themselves in, so it’s unclear what difficulties they could face gaining entry into the United States. As of now, their statuses for spring training and the start of the regular season are in question.

Russ Canzler (Indians)

1/31/12 10:05 am

Indians acquired 1B Russ Canzler from the Rays for cash considerations.

Canzler was designated for assignment by the Rays last week in order to clear a 40-man roster spot for infielder Jeff Keppinger. The 25-year-old posted a promising 314/.401/.530 batting line with 18 home runs, 40 doubles and 83 RBI in 131 games last year at Triple-A Durham and could certainly factor into Cleveland’s plans for 2012. He can play first base, third base and the corner outfield spots. The Indians might DH him if Travis Hafner continues to battle injuries.

Dan Wheeler (Indians)

1/29/12 10:46 pm

Dan Wheeler will make $900,000 if he is on Cleveland’s major league roster.

Cleveland signed Wheeler to a minor league contract last week that came with an invitation to spring training. The contract includes incentives for appearances ($50,000 for every five from 45-70) and games finished ($50,000 for 35, $75,000 for 40, $125,000 for 45 and 50). Wheeler has a solid chance to crack Cleveland’s bullpen after posting a decent 4.38 ERA and 39/8 K/BB ratio across 49 1/3 innings last season with the Red Sox.

Ryan Rohlinger (Indians)

1/26/12 5:09 pm

Indians signed INF Ryan Rohlinger to a minor league contract.

Rohlinger posted an uninspiring .247/.353/.409 slash line in 430 minor league plate appearances last season. He’ll serve as organizational infield depth for the Tribe.
