Huston Street (Padres)

Padres acquired RHP Huston Street from the Rockies for a player to be named player.

The deal is now official. The Padres are expected to assume most, if not all, of his remaining salary. Street is owed $7.5 million next season while his contract includes a $9 million option for 2013 or a $500,000 buyout. The 28-year-old right-hander will replace Heath Bell as the closer in San Diego and should do quite well with the spacious dimensions of PETCO Park. Look for him as a value pick in mixed leagues on draft day.

According to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com, the Padres will acquire Huston Street from the Rockies for a player to be named later.

It appears that the deal is essentially done. The Padres are expected to pick up the remainder of Street’s contract, which includes a $7.5 million salary for 2012 and either a $9 million option for 2013 or a $500,000 buyout. The 28-year-old right-hander had a 3.50 ERA over three seasons in Colorado, so he should do quite nicely in the spacious PETCO Park. He could be a nice late pickup among fantasy closers.

ESPN’s Buster Olney reports that the Rockies have had “extensive talks” with the Padres about closer Huston Street.

The Padres are currently evaluating all options for the ninth inning now that Heath Bell has signed a three-year deal with the Marlins. Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reported Tuesday that the Rockies are willing to cover the $8 million left on Street’s contract if they receive the right prospects in return. However, it’s not clear if that’s the case with the Padres. Street, 28, posted a 3.86 ERA and 55/9 K/BB ratio over 58 1/3 innings in 2011, collecting 29 saves in 33 opportunities.

According to Jayson Stark of ESPN.com, the Rockies are “willing to eat all money for prospects” in trading Huston Street.

Colorado is aggressively shopping its long-time closer. Street posted a solid 3.86 ERA and 55/9 K/BB ratio over 58 1/3 innings this year, but he’s owed $7.5 million in 2012 and Colorado management prefers Rafael Betancourt in the ninth-inning role at this point, so Street has likely pitched his last game as a Rockie. The Padres, Reds, Marlins, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Mets and Orioles have all been linked to Street this offseason, but we can probably cross Toronto and Miami off the list of possible destinations after those clubs acquired Sergio Santos and Heath Bell, respectively.

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Orioles are still discussing a trade with the Rockies for closer Huston Street.

The O’s interest dates back a few weeks, though Troy Renck of the Denver Post was told Monday that it had “cooled.” Street posted a solid 3.86 ERA and 55/9 K/BB ratio over 58 1/3 innings this past season, but he’s expendable due to the emergence of Rafael Betancourt in the ninth inning. The 28-year-old right-hander is owed $7.5 million in 2012.

According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the Reds, Marlins and Red Sox are interested in Huston Street.

The Blue Jays, Mets and Orioles have also been linked recently to the 28-year-old closer. The Rockies are fielding trade offers on Street in the hope that they can land a promising bat or two in return. He posted a solid 3.86 ERA and 55/9 K/BB ratio over 58 1/3 innings this year, but he’s owed $7.5 million in 2012 and Rafael Betancourt has proven capable of stepping into the role.

According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Orioles have inquired about Rockies closer Huston Street.

Street, who is owed $7.5 million in 2012, has also drawn trade interest from the Blue Jays and Mets so far this winter. The 28-year-old posted a 3.86 ERA and 55/9 K/BB ratio over 58 1/3 innings in 2011, collecting 29 saves in 33 opportunities. The Rox will want a significant return.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Rockies and Mets briefly talked about a deal involving Huston Street and Mike Pelfrey.

Interesting. It doesn’t appear as though a deal is imminent, though, as Sherman reports that the Mets “do not seem overly enamored with Street.” Street, 28 is due $7.5 million next season while his contract includes a $9 million player option or a $500,000 buyout. The Mets have a clear need at closer, but they would almost certainly be able to find one for cheaper on the open market. Finding a replacement for Pelfrey, who has logged at least 184 1/3 innings in each of the last four seasons, would likely prove to be more difficult.

According to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Blue Jays have expressed interest in a trade for Rockies’ closer Huston Street.

The Rockies are expected to move Street this winter, as Rafael Betancourt has emerged as an alternative for the closer’s role. Street is due $7.5 million next season while his contract includes a $9 million player option or a $500,000 buyout. The report speculates that the Rockies could make a play at Brad Lidge if Street is traded, though Troy Renck of the Denver Post reported Tuesday that they would likely attempt to sign LaTroy Hawkins.
