Giants

Madison Bumgarner (Giants)

5/17/12 12:20 am

Madison Bumgarner allowed four runs on nine hits in 7 1/3 innings of Wednesday’s loss to the Cardinals.

Two of the runs were charged to Bumgarner after he left the game. His owners can thank Steve Edlefsen. Bumgarner struck out three and walked none in an otherwise pleasant outing, with his biggest mistake coming in the seventh, where he served up a solo home run to David Freese. The non-quality outing is just Bumgarner’s third of the season. He’ll get the Brewers in Milwaukee on Monday.

Buster Posey (Giants)

5/17/12 12:14 am

Buster Posey went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI in Wednesday’s loss to the Cardinals.

The multi-hit night was just Posey’s third in 13 May starts, while the extra-base hit was his first of the month. Nevertheless, he’s still hitting a solid .295/.348/.443, and shouldn’t be expected to struggle to such a severe degree going forward.

Melky Cabrera (Giants)

5/16/12 8:54 pm

Melky Cabrera was a late scratch from Wednesday’s lineup due to a left toe injury.

It’s not clear how he suffered the ailment or how long he might be out, but he should be considered day-to-day until further notice. We’ll update his condition when more is known.

Freddy Sanchez (Giants)

5/16/12 7:51 pm

An MRI on Freddy Sanchez’s back has revealed inflammation.

He’s been given an epidural injection and won’t be able to do anything baseball-wise for a couple days. “He’s a ways away, to be honest,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “I really don?t think about him a lot until he gets close. Nothing against Freddy, but I?ve got 25 guys here.”

Brian Wilson (Giants)

5/16/12 7:43 pm

Brian Wilson (elbow) considers himself ahead of schedule in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Wilson, who underwent the procedure in late April, fully expects to be ready for the start of next season. “I?ll be closing unless someone throws a complete game,” Wilson said. “Which would be sweet.” It’s good that Wilson is so upbeat, but he’s obviously got a long way to go before we can identify a firm timetable on him.

Joaquin Arias (Giants)

5/16/12 5:46 pm

Joaquin Arias (forearm) is not in Wednesday’s lineup.

Arias made an early exit from Tuesday’s game agasint the Rockies after getting hit on the left forearm by a pitch. He only has a contusion, but the Giants are playing it safe. Emmanuel Burriss is playing third base on Wednesday night against the Cardinals.

Freddy Sanchez (Giants)

5/16/12 8:00 am

Freddy Sanchez saw a back specialist Tuesday and was given an epidural injection.

Sanchez recently underwent an MRI on his lower back after it locked up on him while he was rehabbing from shoulder surgery. The 34-year-old hasn’t played in a major league game since last June 4 and there’s no telling when he’ll make it back at this point.

Joaquin Arias (Giants)

5/16/12 7:45 am

Joaquin Arias is day-to-day after X-rays came back negative on his left forearm.

Arias left Tuesday’s game against the Rockies in the fourth inning after he was hit in the left forearm by a pitch, but fortunately for the Giants, he was diagnosed with a contusion and managed to avoid serious injury. There’s a chance he could play Wednesday, but the Giants may hold him out for a day to play it safe.

Tim Lincecum (Giants)

5/16/12 12:56 am

Tim Lincecum surrendered four runs in seven innings Tuesday in a no-decision versus the Rockies.

Lincecum retired 10 of the first 11 hitters he faced, but he couldn’t keep it going from there. The Rockies have hit really poorly away from Coors Field this season, but Lincecum just couldn’t hold them down. He’s gone three straight outings without a quality start since posting back-to-back wins on April 23 and 28.

Gregor Blanco (Giants)

5/15/12 6:56 pm

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that Gregor Blanco is his starting right fielder.

It’s pretty obvious at this point, as Blanco has started each of the last four games in right while also batting leadoff. He’s coming off two straight multi-hit games and has a nice .286/.379/.411 batting line overall this season with a homer and three steals. Blanco has some plate discipline and speed, which helps make up a bit for his lack of pop, but don’t consider him more than a cheap speed option in fantasy leagues. Nate Schierholtz has started just one of the last seven games, while Aubrey Huff has yet to make a start since being activated from the DL a week ago.
