Cubs placed C Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list with a slight tear in his left meniscus.

He’ll need arthroscopic surgery, which will sideline him for around three weeks. The Cubs acquired Koyie Hill from the Reds earlier in the day for depth and officially purchased his contract from the minors. With Steve Clevenger (oblique) still out and Welington Castillo out for a week with a mild MCL sprain in his right knee, Hill and Blake Lalli will share catching duties for now.

Geovany Soto (knee) will undergo an MRI on his left knee Friday morning.

Soto was scratched from Thursday’s lineup due to left knee irritation. Cubs manager Dale Sveum says the struggling backstop is available in an emergency, but he figures to get the next couple days off at the very least. Welington Castillo will handle starting duties in the interim.

Geovany Soto was a late scratch from Thursday’s lineup against the Phillies due to left knee irritation.

Consider him day-to-day. Welington Castillo will start in Soto’s place behind the plate and bat seventh.

Geovany Soto went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Monday’s win over the Braves.

It was one of three dingers the Cubs had on the night, as Bryan LaHair and Ian Stewart had back-to-back shots in the fourth before Soto’s blast in the eighth. Soto is sporting a paltry .167 batting mark for the year, though he does at least have three homers.

After missing a couple of games with upper back tightness, Geovany Soto return for Monday’s loss to the Phillies, finishing 0-for-3 with a walk.

He finishes April batting an abysmal .127 with three extra-base hits in 55 at-bats. As disappointing as he was last year, we have to believe that Soto will turn things around before too long.

Geovany Soto is not in Wednesday’s lineup against the Cardinals.

He’s just getting the day off after the night game. Steve Clevenger, who is hitting .526 (10-for-19) on the young season, will start behind the plate and bat seventh against right-hander Lance Lynn.

Geovany Soto went 0-for-4 on Friday, dropping his average to .150.

Soto had a great spring, but it certainly hasn’t carried over, as he’s driven in just one run in 40 at-bats to date. The Cubs may give Steve Clevenger more playing time until Soto breaks out of his slump.

Geovany Soto is not in Tuesday’s lineup.

We’re assuming he’s just getting the day off, which might not be the worst thing considering that he’s batting just .138 (4-for-29) so far this season. Steve Clevenger will start in his place and bat sixth against Marlins’ right-hander Josh Johnson.
