Rays signed RHP Fernando Rodney to a one-year, $1.75 million contract with a $2.5 million option for 2013.

The option comes with a $250,000 buyout, so Rodney is basically guaranteed $2 million. It’s a hefty price to pay for a 34-year-old who posted a hideous 26/28 K/BB ratio in 32 innings last season for the Angels, but perhaps he’ll bounce back with the change of scenery. He will function as a middle reliever for the Rays.

Updating a previous item, Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes confirms that Fernando Rodney will be guaranteed $2 million in his new contract with the Rays.

Rodney will make $1.75 million next season while the contract includes a $2.5 million option for 2013 or a $250,000 buyout. The Rays are known for making savvy additions, but they have their work cut out for them here. The 34-year-old right-hander has a 4.29 ERA for his career and a walk rate of 4.8 BB/9.

Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times reports that while the Rays haven’t finalized a contract with Fernando Rodney, there is “definitely” something in works.

Topkin expects that a deal could be announced in the next day or two. Rodney told the Associated Press last week that he has agreed to a one-year deal worth around $2 million, but we’re assuming that figure may include some incentives. The 34-year-old right-hander posted a 4.50 ERA and an awful 26/28 K/BB ratio over 32 innings for the Angels in 2011.

Fernando Rodney told the Associated Press last week that he has signed a one-year deal with the Rays.

Rodney told the AP that the contract is worth around $2 million and that he’ll compete for the closer role. However, the Rays have yet to make an official announcement on the matter. Rodney, who turns 35 in March, posted a 4.50 ERA and an ugly 26/28 K/BB ratio over 32 innings last season for the Angels.
