Evan Longoria said last week that his surgically-repaired left hamstring “is ready.”

Longoria underwent a minor procedure on the hamstring on November 20, and although the Rays will take it slow on him early in spring training, it’s not expected to affect his status for Opening Day. Longo was limited to just 74 games last season due to hamstring problems, batting .289/.369/.527 with 17 homers.

Evan Longoria underwent a minor procedure on his left hamstring on November 20.

The Rays made the revelation on the same day they announced they had signed Longoria to an extension through the 2022 season. The third baseman is fully expected to be ready to roll by the time spring training comes around. Longoria, of course, missed much of the 2012 campaign due to a hamstring issue.

Rays signed 3B Evan Longoria to a six-year, $100 million extension through 2022.

The deal also includes a club option for 2023. Longo was already under a relatively team-friendly contract through 2016, but the Rays decided to officially pick up their three options and give their star another six guaranteed years. It’s a risk only because the deal is so lengthy — Longo will play the 2022 season at age 36 — but as long as the third baseman stays healthy, this will undoubtedly turn out to be a good deal for the Rays.

Evan Longoria smashed three solo home runs in Wednesday’s 4-1, season-ending win over the Orioles.

Longo tagged Chris Tillman in the first and fourth before getting Jake Arrieta in the sixth. The three-homer night was just the second of his career, with the other coming on September 18, 2008 in his rookie season. Longo finishes his injury-shortened 2012 the owner of 17 home runs and 55 RBI across 74 games. He hit .289/.369/.527. Having missed a combined 117 games the past two seasons, the trick for Longoria in 2013 will be staying healthy.

Evan Longoria could rest Tuesday and Wednesday if the Rays are eliminated on Monday night.

The Rays are certainly hoping those games matter, but manager Joe Maddon will talk to Longoria if the team is out of the race. The 26-year-old third baseman has been limited to just 71 games this year due to a hamstring injury.

Evan Longoria smashed a game-winning solo home run in the ninth inning on Thursday, powering the Rays to a critical 3-2 victory over the White Sox in Chicago.

Longoria finished the night 1-for-4. His towering blast to left field off Brett Myers in the ninth inning kept the Rays bleak playoff aspirations alive, while perhaps sticking a nail in the White Sox chances. The 26-year-old third baseman is enjoying another terrific season in limited duty, hitting .287/.364/.506 with 14 homers and 50 RBI in just 251 at-bats.

Evan Longoria smashed a three-run homer on Saturday, helping the Rays to an 11-5 defeat of the Blue Jays.

Longoria’s blast was one of four Tampa Bay homers in the game, joining B.J. Upton, Jose Molina and Desmond Jennings. The three-run shot off Brandon Morrow in the second inning was his only hit in four trips to the plate. Even in an injury plagued season, he’s hitting a solid .284/.361/.500 with 13 homers and 47 RBI in 236 at-bats on the season.

Rays manager Joe Maddon said Evan Longoria out of Monday’s lineup because his legs “felt heavy.”

Longoria is available off the bench, so it doesn’t sound like a major concern. He should be back in the lineup Tuesday.
