Padres and RHP Edinson Volquez avoided arbitration by agreeing on a one-year contract.

Volquez, who was acquired from the Reds last month in the Mat Latos deal, was arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter. The 28-year-old right-hander earned $1.6 million last year while posting a 5.71 ERA and 104/65 K/BB ratio over 108 2/3 innings at the major-league level. He’s a nice rebound candidate in the pitcher-friendly PETCO Park.

Padres acquired RHPs Edinson Volquez and Brad Boxberger, 1B Yonder Alonso and C Yasmani Grandal from the Reds for RHP Mat Latos.

Volquez, 28, went 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA for the Reds in 2008 before undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2009 and getting hit with a 50-game PED suspension during his rehab. Things seemed fine after he returned in 2010, but he struggled mightily last season, going 5-7 with a 5.71 ERA and 65 walks in 108 2/3 innings. Volquez still has his old velocity, so the upside is there if he can start throwing more strikes. He?ll make about $1.8 million next year and he’s under control through 2013, so he still qualifies as a pretty nice pickup.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies are still interested in Edinson Volquez.

The Rockies and Reds had discussed a Volquez-for-Huston Street swap, but the two sides are still talking even though Street has been dealt to San Diego. The deal would obviously have to be restructured, but evidently both sides are still open to doing something.

According to the Denver Post’s Troy Renck, the Reds and Rockies have discussed a trade that would send Edinson Volquez to Colorado and Huston Street to Cincinnati.

Renck says the Reds also want the Rockies to throw in a prospect. Volquez had a decent September but still wound up with a 5.71 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 108 2/3 total innings. Street posted a cool 3.86 ERA and 55/9 K/BB ratio in 58 1/3 frames, but he’s owed a whopping $8 million salary in 2012. It doesn’t sound like an agreement is close.
