James Loney (Dodgers)

5/16/12 2:29 pm

James Loney is not in Wednesday’s lineup against the Padres.

He’ll take a seat against the left-hander Clayton Richard. The newly-recalled Jerry Sands will start in his place at first base and bat fifth.

A.J. Ellis (Dodgers)

5/16/12 4:45 am

A.J. Ellis went 2-for-4 in Tuesday’s 5-1 loss to Arizona.

Ellis has hit safely in six of his past seven games, with four multi-hit performances during this span. His .322/.455/.500 is surprising only to those who did not follow his minor league career. He’s certainly a sell-high candidate with such gaudy numbers. But a .300/.400/.475 season certainly looks doable.

Chad Billingsley (Dodgers)

5/16/12 12:38 am

Chad Billingsley lost to the Diamondbacks after giving up four runs in four-plus innings Tuesday night.

Down 1-0 after four, Billingsley was singled to death in the fifth, giving up five straight to start the inning. He was then pulled in favor of Javy Guerra. Some of the blame should probably go to manager Don Mattingly, who put a terrible outfield defense behind Billingsley with Matt Kemp out. Billingsley is now 2-3 with a 3.83 ERA for the season.

Scott Van Slyke (Dodgers)

5/15/12 5:19 pm

Scott Van Slyke is getting his first major league start on Tuesday night against the Diamondbacks.

Van Slyke will play right field and bat fifth against Arizona left-hander Wade Miley. The 25-year-old has two hits and three RBI in three major league plate appearances and was rocking a 1.034 OPS in 32 games at Triple-A Albuquerque before his callup late last week. He may be worth a grab in fantasy leagues while Matt Kemp recovers from his hamstring strain.

Jerry Sands (Dodgers)

5/15/12 7:37 am

Dodgers recalled OF/1B Jerry Sands from Triple-A Albuquerque.

He’ll replace the injured Matt Kemp (hamstring) on the active roster. Sands, 24, was hitting .257/.348/.485 with seven homers, 28 RBI and an .833 OPS in 161 plate appearances with the Isotopes last year. He figures to get most of his at-bats against left-handed pitchers, possibly in place of James Loney at first base, which limits his fantasy value.

Matt Kemp (Dodgers)

5/15/12 7:29 am

Dodgers placed OF Matt Kemp on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 14, with a left hamstring strain.

As expected. Kemp aggravated his hamstring injury on Sunday and an MRI on Monday confirmed a strain. The 27-year-old outfielder didn’t want to go on the disabled list, but the Dodgers didn’t want to risk a prolonged absence for their best player. The hope is that he’ll be ready to go two weeks from now. Jerry Sands has been called up from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding roster move.

Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers)

5/15/12 12:12 am

Clayton Kershaw held the Diamondbacks to four hits over seven scoreless innings in the Dodgers’ 3-1 win Monday.

Things got a little testy, as Kershaw retaliated to an Ian Kennedy inside pitch by brushing back Kennedy later in the game. Nothing came of it, though. Kershaw struck out six in his third win of the year. He has a 2.22 ERA and a stellar 0.91 WHIP.

Matt Kemp (Dodgers)

5/15/12 12:07 am

Matt Kemp will go on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

The Dodgers are planning to call up Jerry Sands in his place. Kemp had his consecutive games streak halted at 399 when he failed to play Monday. Tony Gwynn Jr. figures to see most of the starts in center in his place.

Matt Kemp (Dodgers)

5/14/12 7:46 pm

Matt Kemp is considered day-to-day after an MRI Monday confirmed a left hamstring strain.

It’s good news, as it appears Kemp will avoid a trip to the disabled list. It’s possible, though, that he won’t return to the lineup for a few days. The 27-year-old has struggled at the plate since dealing with the ailment, so hopefully he’ll be back to new after a couple days of rest.

Trent Oeltjen (Dodgers)

5/14/12 6:50 pm

Dodgers designated OF Trent Oeltjen for assignment.

The move was made in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Elian Herrera. Oeltjen is batting just .218/.283/.282 at Triple-A Albuquerque this season and should clear waivers and remain in the organization.
