Scott Van Slyke (Dodgers)

5/21/12 5:18 pm

Scott Van Slyke will bat cleanup and play left field Monday night against the Diamondbacks.

It doesn’t take long to get in the good graces of Dodgers manager Don Mattingly, as Van Slyke is being rewarded for hitting the go-ahead three-run homer in a win over the Cardinals on Sunday. Bobby Abreu will take a seat.

Jerry Hairston Jr. (hamstring) is scheduled to begin playing in extended spring training games Monday.

Hairston will play in games Monday and Tuesday before being re-evaluated for possible activation Wednesday. The veteran infielder has been on the 15-day disabled list since May 7 with a strained left hamstring.

Juan Uribe (Dodgers)

Juan Uribe (wrist) has already been cleared to resume baseball-related activities.

Uribe was placed on the 15-day disabled list last week with soreness in his left wrist. An MRI taken Sunday showed no structural damage and he’s expected to begin full workouts Monday. The veteran infielder should be back in action by late May or early June.

Javy Guerra (Dodgers)

5/21/12 6:06 am

Javy Guerra earned the win on Sunday by tossing a perfect seventh inning against the Cardinals.

Since blowing his last save on May 6, Guerra has posted 5 1/3 scoreless innings, as middle relief appears to suit him and Dodgers much better. As a result, his once monstrous ERA has dropped 176 points to 4.08.

Chad Billingsley (Dodgers)

5/21/12 6:01 am

Chad Billingsley was unimpressive in Sunday’s no-decision against the Cardinals, surrendering five runs (three earned) on eight hits and four walks in six innings of work.

He also fanned seven — the most since his first start on April 6. The damage could have been much worse, as Billingsley escaped big jams in the first and second innings. After stringing together four great outings in his first five starts, the right-hander has looked downright pedestrian in four straight appearances. He will try to get back on track Saturday against the Astros.

Elian Herrera (Dodgers)

5/21/12 5:55 am

Elian Herrera went 3-for-4 in Sunday’s 6-5 win over the Cardinals.

He also scored two runs. And just like that, the 27-year-old is batting .385 in the five games since his first major league call-up.

Scott Van Slyke (Dodgers)

5/20/12 10:20 pm

Pinch-hitter Scott Van Slyke hit a three-run homer off Marc Rzepczynski on Sunday to propel the Dodgers to a 6-5 win over the Cardinals.

It was the first big-league homer for Van Slyke, who is 3-for-9 since being called up on May 9. He’s started just one game, but he already has six RBI off the bench.

Kenley Jansen (Dodgers)

5/20/12 10:19 pm

Kenley Jansen protected a one-run lead to earn his fifth save Sunday against the Cardinals.

Jansen blew a save Friday, but he ended up with the win in that one. He’s now 5-for-6 since replacing Javy Guerra in the closer’s role.

Matt Kemp (Dodgers)

5/20/12 7:23 pm

Matt Kemp (hamstring) is confident that he’ll return to the field next week.

He’s eligible to be activated on May 29 and is aiming to do just that. Kemp was given a platelet rich plasma injection Wednesday to help speed up the healing of his strained left hamstring and has reported steady progress to this point.

Mark Ellis (Dodgers)

5/20/12 4:05 pm

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Sunday that a doctor told him that Mark Ellis’ left leg might have needed amputatation if they had waited four or five more hours to make a cut to relieve pressure.

Scary stuff. Ellis underwent a fasciotomy for a serious condition that was discovered earlier Saturday. He will miss at least six weeks of game action, which is small potatoes compared to what Mattingly was informed. Justin Sellers and Elian Herrera will likely split time at second base for now.
