Hanley Ramirez (Dodgers)

2/2/13 11:35 pm

Hanley Ramirez is thoroughly enjoying his time supporting his country, playing in the Dominican Winter League, the Caribbean Series and the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

While the Dodgers had hoped that Ramirez would get some work in at shortstop, he served as the DH during winter ball and will play mostly third base during the WBC. The Dodgers still intend to use him as their everyday shortstop while Luis Cruz mans the hot corner, but with a shortened spring training to work on his defense there they could always opt to give Dee Gordon another chance.

Bobby Abreu (Dodgers)

2/2/13 12:43 pm

CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman writes that the Orioles “wouldn’t be a bad fit” for Bobby Abreu.

Abreu has struggled to attract interest in free agency this offseason and it remains to be seen if any team is willing to take a chance on him. The 39-year-old batted just .242/.350/.342 in 257 plate appearances between the Dodgers and Angels this past season, and is doubtful to make an impact even if he manages to land a semi-regular role in 2013.

Kyle Cofield (Dodgers)

2/2/13 12:16 pm

Dodgers signed RHP Kyle Cofield to a minor league contract.

Cofield, 26, has a career 4.11 ERA over parts of eight seasons in the minors. He should open 2013 at the Double-A level with the Dodgers.

Chad Billingsley said Friday that he’s thrown eight bullpen sessions so far this offseason and not had any issues with his pitching elbow.

That’s encouraging. Billingsley was shut down late last season with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament, but he was given platelet-rich plasma injections and has had a relatively normal offseason. There’s always the possibility that his ligament will snap, but for now it appears he has a good shot at being ready for the start of the season.

Bobby Abreu (Dodgers)

2/1/13 9:15 am

CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman lists the Marlins and Rays as “a couple possibilities” for Bobby Abreu.

Abreu has struggled to attract interest on the open market after batting just .242/.350/.342 in 257 plate appearances between the Dodgers and Angels this past season. He wouldn’t be a bad guy to give a minor league deal to, though, and there could be playing time available both in Miami and Tampa.

Bobby Abreu (Dodgers)

1/27/13 8:30 pm

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe confirms that the Red Sox are unlikely to pursue free agent Bobby Abreu.

The Red Sox were among the teams that watched Abreu workout in his native Venezuela last month, but Cafardo expects them to look elsewhere for a left-handed hitting outfielder to split time with Jonny Gomes. After batting just .242/.350/.342 in 257 plate appearances between the Dodgers and Angels this past season, Abreu has struggled to attract interest on the open market. It’s fair to wonder if any team is still willing to take a chance on him at this point. The Miami Herald reported earlier in the week that Abreu “would love” to play for the Marlins.

A.J. Ellis (Dodgers)

1/27/13 5:38 pm

A.J. Ellis said he feels fully recovered from offseason knee surgery and has already been cleared to resume baseball activities.

Ellis is three months removed from a clean-up procedure on his left knee and expects to be ready for the start of spring training. He batted .270/.373/.414 with 13 home runs and 52 RBI in 133 games in his first full year as a starter and will be the Dodgers’ regular catcher again in 2013.

Kenley Jansen (Dodgers)

1/27/13 8:26 am

Kenley Jansen (heart) has been off blood thinners since November and has begun his throwing program.

Jansen underwent a heart ablation in October and has been told by doctors that he should have no further issues. “I’m doing well,” Jansen said. “This is going to take care of it, no more problems. Put it in God’s hands now.” The right-hander has thrown one bullpen session already and will be ready to roll at the start of spring training. He’s expected to set up for Brandon League this season.

Matt Kemp (Dodgers)

1/26/13 3:19 pm

Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register reports that Matt Kemp (shoulder) has resumed hitting activities.

Kemp is already hitting off a tee and doing soft toss, and will advance to live pitching by next week. He remains on track to be ready for Opening Day. The 28-year-old center fielder has a .315/.387/.567 batting line, 62 home runs, 195 RBI and 49 stolen bases in 267 games since the start of the 2011 season and should be drafted comfortably in the top half of the first round this spring.

Ryan Mount (Dodgers)

1/26/13 12:26 pm

Dodgers signed INF/OF Ryan Mount to a minor league contract.

A second-round pick in 2005, Mount spent the last four seasons with the Angels’ Double-A affiliate. He’s merely organizational depth.
