Stephen Drew (Diamondbacks)

2/4/12 12:06 am

Diamondbacks’ general manager Kevin Towers said during a web chat Thursday that “we still think there’s a chance” Stephen Drew (ankle) will be ready for Opening Day.

“With Stephen, he’s progressing every week,” wrote Towers. “He’s swinging the bat now and doing baseball-specific agility drills, which is good. We still think there’s a chance that he could be ready by Opening Day. Until we start playing games and see where he’s at, so far the drills are in a controlled environment and game speed can be different. We’ll have a better idea then.” It’s important to note that Drew is headed into what is essentially his contract year (his $10 million option for 2013 includes a $1.35 buyout), so he’ll likely take every precaution before playing in games. The D-Backs re-signed Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald over the winter, so they have some insurance in the event that he begins the season on the disabled list. Fantasy owners should monitor this situation closely in the coming weeks.

Miguel Montero has informed the Diamondbacks that he will cut off extension talks on March 20.

The D’Backs failed to reach a long-term deal with Montero before his arbitration hearing Tuesday, instead agreeing to a one-year, $5.9 million contract for 2012. The 28-year-old catcher, who hit .282/.351/.469 with 18 home runs and 86 RBI last year for Arizona, will be eligible for free agency in the fall if nothing gets done.

Ryan Roberts (Diamondbacks)

The D’Backs and INF Ryan Roberts avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.0125 million contract.

Roberts requested $2.275 million and was offered $1.65 million from the Diamondbacks when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier this month. It took a couple of weeks for the two sides to work toward a middle ground. The 31-year-old third baseman is under team control through the 2015 season.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that a settlement or a long-term extension between the Diamondbacks and Miguel Montero prior to Tuesday’s scheduled arbitration hearing is unlikely.

Montero requested $6.8 million and was offered $5.4 million from the Diamondbacks when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier this month. The two sides have been discussing a long-term deal for a while now, but it appears that nothing is close. Montero batted .282/.351/.469 with 18 home runs, 86 RBI and an .820 OPS last season for Arizona.

Xavier Nady (Diamondbacks)

1/27/12 3:53 pm

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that there is “mutual interest” between the Giants and free agent infielder/outfielder Xavier Nady.

Schulman says a potential deal would “almost certainly” be of the minor league variety that contains a spring training invite. Nady put together an ugly .248/.287/.359 batting line over 223 plate appearances in an injury-shortened season for the D’Backs in 2011. His career .275/.328/.438 line is much better, though, so he wouldn’t be a bad bench bat.

Daryle Ward (Diamondbacks)

1/25/12 5:14 pm

Daryle Ward was suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for amphetamines.

The 36-year-old might simply decide to hang up his cleats. Ward was released by the Diamondbacks in September of last season after failing to get past Double-A and hasn’t appeared in a big league game since 2008.

Brad Ziegler (Diamondbacks)

1/24/12 6:39 pm

The Diamondbacks and RHP Brad Ziegler avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.795 million contract.

Ziegler requested $1.945 million and was offered $1.46 million from the Diamondbacks when arbitration figures were exchanged last week, so the two sides settled just north of the midpoint. The 32-year-old right-hander posted a 2.16 ERA and 44/19 K/BB ratio over 58 1/3 innings last season between Arizona and Oakland. He remains under team control through 2014.

Craig Tatum (Diamondbacks)

1/23/12 3:36 pm

Diamondbacks claimed C Craig Tatum off waivers from the Astros.

Houston designated Tatum for assignment earlier this month to clear a 40-man roster spot for outfielder Jack Cust. The 38-year-old catcher batted just .195/.245/.230 in 96 plate appearances last season for the Orioles and is doubtful to reach the major league level with Arizona.

Ryan Roberts (Diamondbacks)

1/18/12 12:15 am

Ryan Roberts requested $2.275 million and was offered $1.65 million from the Diamondbacks when arbitration figures were exchanged Tuesday.

Roberts, who is arbitration-eligible for the first time, is in line for a nice raise after hitting .249/.341/.427 with 19 homers, 65 RBI, 18 stolen bases and a .768 OPS with the Diamondbacks last season. Assuming they eventually settle around the midpoint, he’s likely looking at a salary around $2 million for 2012.
