Ryan Roberts (Diamondbacks)

5/21/12 6:04 pm

Ryan Roberts will be moved into a utility infield role following the promotion of Josh Bell from Triple-A Reno.

Color us surprised. Roberts got off to a very slow start, but he’s hitting .321 (17-for-53) with a home run and eight RBI this month. He’ll serve as a backup at third base for now and will also split time with Aaron Hill at second base. Bell hasn’t proven that he can hit major league pitching, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the Diamondbacks change course pretty quickly.

Josh Bell (Diamondbacks)

5/21/12 5:56 pm

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Monday that Josh Bell was promoted to start at third base.

In turn, Ryan Roberts will be shifted into a utility infield role. Bell was hitting .381/.429/.619 with four homers, 30 RBI and a 1.047 OPS in 112 plate appearances with Triple-A Reno, but he has an awful .200/.221/.264 batting line and a 78/6 K/BB over 226 plate appearances in the majors. He’s worth a flier in NL-only leagues, but we don’t think this arrangement will last very long.

Josh Bell (Diamondbacks)

5/21/12 4:35 pm

Diamondbacks recalled INF Josh Bell from Triple-A Reno.

Bell, who was acquired from the Orioles in late April, was hitting .381/.429/.619 with four homers, 30 RBI and a 1.047 OPS in 112 plate appearances with the Aces. We aren’t ready to give up on the 25-year-old completely, but he has a woeful 78/6 K/BB ratio over 226 plate appearances in the big leagues. Ryan Roberts has turned things around a bit this month, so we wouldn’t bank on a ton of playing time.

Cody Ransom (Diamondbacks)

5/21/12 4:31 pm

Diamondbacks designated 3B Cody Ransom for assignment.

He was cleared to make room for Josh Bell on the active roster. Ransom was a popular waiver wire after enjoying some early success this season, but it didn’t take him long to show his true colors. He had just one hit in his last 15 at-bats.

David Hernandez has allowed one run run since April 30.

The Arizona setup man struggled out of the gate this season but seems to have settled in nicely. Hernandez now boasts a 2.37 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 27/7 K/BB ratio through 19 innings of relief. He also has seven holds.

Wade Miley (Diamondbacks)

5/20/12 4:45 pm

Wade Miley held the Royals to just six hits in seven scoreless innings of work on Sunday, improving to 5-1 in Arizona’s 2-0 road win.

Miley struck out three and walked two in completing seven innings of work for the first time in six starts this season. Clinging to his rotation spot with greater than anticipated ferocity, Miley is now the owner of a 2.14 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 30/14 K/BB ratio through 46 1/3 innings. He’ll get the Brewers at home next weekend.

Stephen Drew (Diamondbacks)

5/20/12 7:32 am

Stephen Drew (ankle) will play in one or two extended spring training games before beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno.

The D’Backs had hoped that Drew could start a rehab assignment Sunday, but he’s dealing with a bit of soreness in his surgically-repaired ankle and the team doesn’t want to push the envelope. Assuming he does indeed begin playing for Reno soon, Drew should be ready to rejoin the big club in early June.

Miguel Montero went 2-for-4 with two doubles in Friday’s win over the Royals.

Montero piled up three RBI, driving in the go-ahead runs with a double in the eighth inning off Tim Collins. The 28-year-old is batting .264 with a .354 on-base percentage and 31 RBI in 35 games played this season for the Diamondbacks.

Joe Saunders (Diamondbacks)

5/18/12 10:41 pm

Joe Saunders gave up three runs over six innings in a no-decision against the Royals.

Saunders struck out two and allowed eight hits. Of his 105 pitches, 67 were for strikes, and he issued just two walks. He’s given up 15 earned runs in his last 14 1/3 innings and now has a mere 29 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings this season.

Melvin Mora (Diamondbacks)

5/18/12 6:34 pm

Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com reports that the Giants didn’t make an offer to Melvin Mora.

This conflicts with a Venezuelan newspaper report that claimed Mora was in negotiations with the Giants and expected to travel to the U.S. this weekend. According to Baggarly, the Giants had a ”one text conversation” with Mora’s agent, but there is ”absolutely no offer made.” Mora turned a minor league contract from the Rangers this offseason, and is reportedly considering an offer from the Reds.
