Angels signed LHP C.J. Wilson to a five-year, $77.5 million contract.

Not only did the Angels sign the best hitter available in Albert Pujols, they also secured the top starting pitcher on the free agent market. Wilson turned down a more lucrative six-year contract from the Marlins for the opportunity to pitch in his native Southern California. The 31-year-old left-hander has a 3.14 ERA since making the move to the starting rotation at the start of 2010, which is pretty impressive considering that he called the Ballpark at Arlington home. There’s a good chance he’ll be even more effective pitching half his games in Angel Stadium.

ESPN’s Karl Ravech reports that C.J. Wilson’s contract with the Angels is worth $77.5 million over five years.

That doesn’t change the fact that this contract still looks like a reasonable value for the Angels. The Rangers will receive the Angels’ second-round draft pick and a supplemental choice as compensation for losing the left-hander.

MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports that C.J. Wilson signed a five-year, $75 million contract with the Angels.

Wilson reportedly had a six-year offer on the table from the Marlins, but he has decided to come home to Southern California on what looks like a very reasonable contract given some of the figures that were originally tossed around. The 31-year-old left-hander has a 3.14 ERA since moving into the starting rotation at the start of the 2010 season and should fit nicely in the Angels’ rotation. He should also enjoy the switch to the more pitcher-friendly confines of the team’s home stadium.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Angels have signed left-hander C.J. Wilson.

And we all thought the Marlins were the ones on the spending spree. No word on the exact terms, but Wilson was reportedly mulling a five-year deal worth more than $70 million. He’ll join a talented pitching staff which also includes Jared Weaver, Dan Haren and Ervin Santana. The 31-year-old left-hander went 16-7 with a 2.94 ERA over 34 starts this season.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that C.J. Wilson is expected to accept the Angels’ five-year contract offer.

It’s a reversal of course, as Wilson had reportedly been leaning towards accepting an offer from the Marlins, whose proposal was for six years. But, Wilson is from California and would love to pitch in his home state. We can’t assume this one is over by any stretch, but it appears as though the left-hander might remain in the AL West.

TR Sullivan of MLB.com reports that C.J. Wilson “could be ready” to accept the Marlins’ six-year offer.

Sullivan says the long-term commitment appeals to Wilson and he is also intrigued by the chance to hit. The Marlins are viewed as the favorites at this point, but Wilson isn’t done meeting with both teams face-to-face yet, so an official decision has not yet been made. Stay tuned.

Karl Ravech of ESPN reports that C.J. Wilson will meet with both the Marlins and Angels face-to-face Wednesday night.

Wilson has already arrived at the Winter Meetings in Dallas. He’ll listen to proposals from both teams and possibly make a decision as early as tonight. The Marlins have reportedly offered Wilson a six-year deal and are considered the favorites, while the Angels are only offering five years but are Wilson’s preferred location. It looks like this one will go down to the wire.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Angels are unlikely to offer C.J. Wilson a six-year contract.

That’s been the feeling for a while now. Because of this, Heyman says, the Marlins have the edge, even though most feel that, all things being equal, Wilson would prefer to sign with the Angels. He’s likely looking at around $90 million from the Marlins or $75 million from the Angels, so it’d be hard to blame him for taking dough.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Marlins are the “best bet” to sign C.J. Wilson, with the Angels a close second.

It’s starting to get a little ridiculous at this point. The Marlins, who previously have never had a payroll north of $60 million, have already handed out $191 million worth of contract in a matter of days and look to be willing to spend more on the top available free agent pitcher. It’s a two-horse race, as the Nationals and Rangers hae bowed out.

Bob Klapisch of the Bergen Record reports that C.J. Wilson signing with the Angels is “very close” to being finalized.

After the Marlins signed Buehrle, the Angels immediate became the big favorites for Wilson even though Miami reportedly hadn’t given up on him. The Marlins’ offer was reportedly for six year, so it will be interesting to see if the Halos ended up going to that length. Wilson should have no trouble getting in excess of $15 million per season after Buehrle got $14.5.
