Peter Moylan (Braves)

2/3/12 5:31 pm

Peter Moylan (shoulder) said Thursday that he has been playing catch from 60 feet twice a week.

Moylan is currently working his way back from arthroscopic surgery on his right rotator cuff in October. The 33-year-old was non-tendered by the Braves in December, but signed a minor league deal with the club last month. We’ll know a lot more about his progress once he throws from a mound, but the hope is that he’ll be able to contribute out of the bullpen prior to the All-Star break.

Jason Heyward (Braves)

2/3/12 8:54 am

Chipper Jones said Jason Heyward is “90 percent” of the way to getting his swing back.

Heyward has been working on his swing at Turner Field 2-3 times a week since the beginning of January with Jones, hitting coach Greg Walker and assistant hitting coach Scott Fletcher. Jones went into great detail regarding Heyward’s swing, saying, among other things, that “the ball is jumping off the bat now close to what it was in spring training 2010,” and that “when he gets this hinge [wrists] right here, where he gets a little takeway ? a little separation, we call it, between step and hands ? he?ll be all the way back.” Heyward has also dropped over 20 pounds as he looks to bounce back from a disappointing 2011 campaign.

Tommy Hanson (Braves)

2/2/12 7:24 pm

Tommy Hanson (shoulder) expects to have zero limitations at the start of spring training.

Hanson has been on a throwing program since early January and continues to build the strength of his prized right arm. “It feels better now than it did [in December],” he said Thursday. “I’m definitely a lot more optimistic now than I was even last month.” The 25-year-old is a fantasy ace when healthy.

Jason Heyward (Braves)

1/31/12 11:05 pm

Jason Heyward currently checks in at 235 pounds, after reporting to spring training last year at 256 pounds.

Heyward put on weight last year in an effort to build on his impressive rookie campaign, but ended up feeling sluggish after coming down with a shoulder injury. “I wasn?t feeling like myself,” said Heyward. “I didn?t feel that I could make my body do what my mind wanted to do. I wanted to make sure I have that feel, that control again.” In addition to making changes to his diet and workout regimen this offseason, he worked on the basics of his swing with personal hitting coach C.J. Stewart. With his shoulder issues seemingly behind him, the 22-year-old outfielder looks like a fine bounceback candidate in 2012.

Chipper Jones (Braves)

1/31/12 7:43 pm

Chipper Jones told David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday that the 2012 season might not be his last.

The veteran third baseman dealt with some discomfort in his surgically-repaired right knee during the offseason, but hasn’t had any issues since he started hitting again this month. “As long as I stay healthy and I?m having fun, I?m going to keep going,” said Jones. “I sit here with three weeks to go before spring training and I?m not ready to say this is it.” Jones, who turns 40 in April, is owed $13 million this season while his contract includes a $7 million club option for 2013 which vests automatically at $9 million if he plays at least 123 games in 2012.

Tim Hudson (Braves)

1/30/12 12:56 pm

Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell said he will be cautious early this season with Tim Hudson.

Hudson underwent back surgery in late November to repair a herniated disc after posting a solid 3.22 ERA and 158/56 K/BB ratio across 215 regular-season innings. David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution suspects that the 36-year-old right-hander might not be ready before mid-April this year.

Buddy Carlyle (Braves)

1/30/12 12:11 pm

Braves signed RHP Buddy Carlyle to a minor league contract.

The deal does not come with an invitation to spring training, meaning Carlyle will be in minor league camp. He posted a 4.70 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in eight relief appearances with the Yankees last year before being released in August. The Braves probably aren’t expecting much.

Julio Lugo (Braves)

1/30/12 10:00 am

According to MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian, talks between the Indians and Julio Lugo have “fallen apart.”

It was reported about 10 days ago that the Indians had signed Lugo to a minor league contract. But no deal was ever finalized. The 36-year-old infielder batted just .136/.208/.136 with zero home runs and three RBI in 48 plate appearances last season for Atlanta.

Jason Heyward (Braves)

1/28/12 4:30 pm

Jason Heyward attributed part of his struggles last season to his conditioning and inability to stay healthy.

“I knew how I felt,” Heyward said. “I knew what I could and couldn’t do. My swing got altered. I changed my hands to make up for the shoulder by changing my base load approach, and that got me more out of line. I know I have to go to Spring Training in the best shape possible. If I do that, I am healthy and there are no issues, then I can do what I need to do — show up and just play baseball.” After playing in only 128 games last season and seeing his run production dropoff considerably, Heyward looks to be a prime candidate for a breakout in 2012.

Kenshin Kawakami (Braves)

1/27/12 1:10 pm

Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun reports that Kenshin Kawakami has reached an agreement with the Chunichi Dragons and a deal should be announced soon.

The report was translated by NPB Tracker’s Patrick Newman. Kawakami dealt with shoulder issues with the Braves this past season and wound up posting an 8.86 ERA over 18 games in the minors. Obviously, the three-year, $23 million deal he signed prior to the 2009 campaign didn’t work out so well for Atlanta.
