Brandon Lyon (Blue Jays)

2/3/13 4:24 pm

CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports that the Mets are closing in on a deal with free agent Brandon Lyon.

Lyon posted a 3.10 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 63/20 K/BB ratio in 61 innings for the Astros and Blue Jays in 2012. If signed, he’ll be the third right-handed reliever the Mets have added this week after signing LaTroy Hawkins and Scott Atchison. Lyon will presumably serve in a setup role with the Mets, but has closing experience and could serve as an insurance policy behind Frank Francisco.

Esmil Rogers (Blue Jays)

2/2/13 7:49 pm

Esmil Rogers has decided not to play for the Dominican Republic in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

Like fellow teammate Melky Cabrera, Rogers felt like he needed to be in camp with his new team. Rogers, who was acquired this offseason in the Mike Aviles trade with the Indians, will likely work in a middle relief role for the Blue Jays in 2013.

Melky Cabrera (Blue Jays)

2/2/13 5:22 pm

Melky Cabrera has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Dominican Republic squad in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

Cabrera was included on the provisional roster released last month, but he has apparently changed his mind about participating. It’s unknown whether recent allegations of purchasing performance-enhancing drugs from the Biogenesis clinic in Miami played a role in his decision.

Brandon Lyon (Blue Jays)

2/1/13 10:16 pm

ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin reports that free agent Brandon Lyon is currently talking to several teams, though no signing is imminent.

It had been reported a few weeks ago that Lyon was in deep discussions to join the Giants, but their interest seems to have cooled some. Lyon posted a solid 3.10 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 63/20 K/BB ratio in 61 innings for the Astros in Blue Jays in 2012, and is one of the top relievers remaining on the free agent market.

Andy LaRoche (Blue Jays)

1/30/13 4:04 pm

Blue Jays signed INF Andy LaRoche to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

LaRoche hasn’t appeared in the major leagues since the 2011 season, when he posted a brutal .247/.320/.333 batting line in 104 plate appearances with the A’s. He is doubtful to make any sort of impact in Toronto.

Kelly Johnson (Blue Jays)

1/28/13 11:01 am

The Rays have signed Kelly Johnson to a one-year contract, according to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.

Johnson posted an ugly .255/.313/.365 batting line over 581 plate appearances last season for the Blue Jays, but he has a powerful swing and is capable of offering high-level fantasy production when everything is clicking. He will likely start at second base in 2013 for Tampa Bay, allowing Ben Zobrist to play primarily in right field.

Blue Jays signed INF Jarrett Hoffpauir to a minor league contract.

Hoffpauir’s last look in the majors came with the Jays in 2010, when he received 37 plate appearances. He batted .280/.340/.366 with three homers last year for the Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate.

Samuel Dyson (Blue Jays)

1/22/13 12:05 pm

Blue Jays designated RHP Sam Dyson for assignment.

The move clears a spot for the newly-signed Mark DeRosa on the active roster. Dyson made two appearances with the Blue Jays last season and posted a 3.04 ERA and 38/20 K/BB ratio between High-A and Double-A. He could draw interest on waivers.

Mark DeRosa (Blue Jays)

1/22/13 12:00 pm

Blue Jays signed INF/OF Mark DeRosa to a one-year, $750,000 contract.

The deal includes a club option for 2014. It’s surprising to see DeRosa get a guaranteed contract, as the 37-year-old was bothered by injuries again last year and batted just .188 with zero homers in 101 plate appearances. Assuming he can stay off the disabled list, he’ll function as a utility player in Toronto.

Josh Thole (Blue Jays)

1/19/13 8:59 am

Blue Jays GM Alex Anthpoulos said he expects Josh Thole to begin 2013 at Triple-A Buffalo.

The Jays signed Henry Blanco to a one-year deal last week, and Anthpoulos confirmed that the backup job will be his to lose going in spring training. Thole batted just .234/.294/.290 with one home run and 21 RBI in 104 games with the Mets this past season. He can continue to be ignored outside of deeper AL-only leagues.
