Angels

Vernon Wells (Angels)

5/21/12 6:19 pm

Vernon Wells will need surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb and will be sidelined for at least 8-10 weeks.

He’ll undergo the procedure Tuesday, and it sounds like he will not be back until the second half. The Angels are probably better off without Wells in the lineup, anyway, but it obviously hurts their depth. Peter Bourjos is due for an uptick in playing time.

Bobby Cassevah (Angels)

5/21/12 3:22 pm

The Angels are expected to recall RHP Bobby Cassevah from Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday.

Cassevah, who began the season on the DL with a sore right shoulder, has a 6.75 ERA and 7/4 K/BB ratio in 12 innings at the Triple-A level this year. He’ll function as a middle reliever for the Halos.

Kole Calhoun (Angels)

5/21/12 11:08 am

The Angels are expected to call up outfielder Kole Calhoun before Monday’s game against the A’s.

Kalhoun is batting .296/.365/.491 with five home runs and 31 RBI in 43 games this year at the Triple-A level. He slugged 22 home runs and stole 20 bases last year in Single-A. The 24-year-old will function as outfield depth while Vernon Wells and Ryan Langerhans recover from injuries.

Maicer Izturis (Angels)

5/21/12 10:49 am

Maicer Izturis finished 0-for-6 in Sunday’s 13-inning interleague loss to the Padres.

Izturis is batting just .244 with a .614 OPS in 27 games this season. He does have seven stolen bases, but the 31-year-old is not a sure bet for regular playing time and can remain ignored in most mixed fantasy leagues.

Ryan Langerhans (Angels)

5/20/12 8:21 pm

Ryan Langerhans separated his right shoulder Sunday when he ran into the outfield wall chasing a John Baker double Sunday.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said both Langerhans and Vernon Wells (thumb) were likely headed to the disabled list. Since Torii Hunter will not be back with the club Monday, Peter Bourjos immediately becomes an intriguing fantasy commodity for the coming scoring period.

Mike Trout (Angels)

5/20/12 8:16 pm

Mike Trout went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, two walks, two runs scored and two stolen bases Sunday against the Padres.

The stat line barely does it justice, as Trout’s third hit came on a routine grounder to the shortstop that he simply beat out in the 10th inning. He then promptly stole second. He was intentionally walked in the 11th. The Angels’ super prospect is now batting .355/.420/.605 to go along with 10 extra-base hits, 10 RBI and six steals through only 20 starts. He’s the real deal and more.

Albert Pujols (Angels)

5/20/12 8:15 pm

Albert Pujols made his season debut at third base during Sunday’s extra-inning game.

Pujols started four games at third for the Cardinals last season in his first action at the position since 2002. He probably won’t get any starts there this year, but he might make the occasional odd appearance.

Vernon Wells (Angels)

5/20/12 8:14 pm

Vernon Wells (thumb) and Ryan Langerhans (separated right shoulder) are both likely to be placed on the disabled list, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Sunday.

Neither player flew to Oakland, another indication that several roster moves are coming. Wells hurts his thumb during a stolen base attempt Sunday and Langerhans hurt his shoulder running into a wall chasing a John Baker double. Unfortunately for the Angels, MLB.com’s Alden Gonzalez confirmed that Torii Hunter will not be back with the club Monday. The Angels used 21 players in their 13-inning loss to San Diego Sunday, partly because of the length of the game, and partly because Hunter and Langerhans hurt themselves. Stay tuned for a slew of roster moves out of LA.

Vernon Wells (Angels)

5/20/12 4:41 pm

Vernon Wells was removed from Sunday’s game against the Padres in the third inning after injuring his right thumb.

The injury occurred when he stole a base earlier in the game. We haven’t been updated on the severity of the injury, but the Angels have the luxury of giving him some rest with Peter Bourjos on the roster.

Erick Aybar (Angels)

5/19/12 11:59 pm

The struggling Erick Aybar went 4-for-4 with a triple, a double and a steal Saturday against the Padres.

Aybar has six hits the last two games, taking his average from .189 to .221. He still may prove to be a modest asset in mixed leagues this year, though since it doesn’t look like he’ll recapture the leadoff spot, his upside isn’t what it was.
