Andres Blanco is expected to opt out of his minor league contract with the Nationals.
The veteran infielder failed to win an Opening Day roster spot and evidently thinks he’ll find a better situation elsewhere. He batted just .224/.263/.342 over 82 plate appearances with the Rangers last season.

Nationals reassigned INF Andres Blanco to minor league camp.
This latest series of cuts means that Stephen Lombardozzi is all but guaranteed a spot on the Opening Day roster. Blanco, a non-roster invitee, had just two hits in 32 at-bats (.063) this spring. He has an out-clause in his minor league contract and Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson suspects that the Phillies could have interest.

Andres Blanco is scheduled to undergo a procedure Thursday to address an ear infection.
The issue shouldn’t keep Blanco off the field for long. The 27-year-old is in the mix for a reserve infielder job this spring after batting .224/.263/.342 over 82 plate appearances with the Rangers last season.

The deal also includes a spring training invite. Blanco, 27, batted just .224/.263/.342 over 82 plate appearances with the Rangers this season while also dealing with a nagging lower back injury. He’ll compete for a utility infield job.
