Jarrod Saltalamacchia left Friday’s game with an apparent head injury.

Saltalamacchia was hit in the side of the head after a ball deflected off Ty Wigginton in the fifth inning. Kelly Shoppach has replaced him behind the plate. Stay tuned for an update on his status.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Albert Pujols could be used at third base during interleague play.

The Angels are looking to get Pujols, Kendrys Morales, and Mark Trumbo in the same lineup without a designated hitter, and haven’t ruled out the possibility of trying Pujols at third base, though nothing is imminent. Pujols appeared at third base in seven games with the Cardinals in 2011.

Emilio Bonifacio left Friday’s game against the Indians with an undisclosed injury.

Bonifacio was injured on a slide while attempting to steal second base in the fifth inning. We’ll know more on his status following the game.

Rangers president and CEO Nolan Ryan said he doesn?t expect Josh Hamilton’s contract situation to be resolved until after the season.

The Rangers reportedly reopened contract discussions earlier this month, but Hamilton is ultimately expected to test the free agent market, and will likely have serious competition for his services. “It’s hard to predict what will happen, things just have to play out,” Ryan said. “We’re certainly hoping we can work a deal out. I think they’re probably of the mindset to go through the season, see what happens and see what the market is. What that timetable is, I don’t know. If I had to guess, it would be at the end of November or in December.”

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Shaun Marcum is ”still a little sore” from a cramp suffered Thursday but isn’t expected to miss his next start.

Marcum had cramping issues, and lasted just five innings in his last start, but this doesn’t appear to be a serious injury. For now, consider him day-to-day.

Jose Tabata was benched Friday for not running out a ground ball.

“We?ve seen it happen a couple of times,” manager Clint Hurdle said. “They understand here that when that happens, there’s something else that’s going to happen: You?re going to sit with me and watch.” It sounds like the one-game benching for Tabata is team protocol. He’ll likely be back in the lineup Saturday.

Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com reports that the Giants didn’t make an offer to Melvin Mora.

This conflicts with a Venezuelan newspaper report that claimed Mora was in negotiations with the Giants and expected to travel to the U.S. this weekend. According to Baggarly, the Giants had a ”one text conversation” with Mora’s agent, but there is ”absolutely no offer made.” Mora turned a minor league contract from the Rangers this offseason, and is reportedly considering an offer from the Reds.

Lance Berkman is not in Friday’s lineup.

Berkman was a late scratch Tuesday, and missed time earlier this week, but we’re assuming this is just a scheduled day off. Matt Carpenter is starting at first base, hitting second.

Carlos Beltran (knee) returned to the Cardinals lineup Friday.

Beltran had been out since Monday with knee/foot soreness. He’ll avoid the disabled list, but continue to view him as day-to-day, for now.

Josh Hamilton returned to the Rangers lineup Friday.

As expected. Hamilton was given a routine day off Thursday. The impending free agent slugger is hitting .404/.458/.838 batting line, 18 home runs and 45 RBI in 35 games played this season

Eric Stults will start Saturday against the Angels.

Stults, who was just claimed off waivers from the White Sox, will replace the injured Tim Stauffer (elbow) in the starting rotation. The 32-year-old left-hander owns a 4.84 ERA over 25 starts and 18 relief appearances in the majors and can be ignored in fantasy leagues.

Josh Tomlin (wrist) played catch at a distance of 75 feet Friday.

Tomlin will progress in 15 foot increments with the goal of throwing off a mound early next week. The 27-year-old was recently diagnosed with intersection syndrome in his right wrist, a result of gripping the baseball too tightly in his last start on May 7. It’s not considered serious ailment and he could be ready to rejoin the Indians’ rotation by the end of the month.

Kyle McClellan has been diagnosed with a strained flexor pronator and a small tear of his ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

McClellan left Thursday’s game due to the injury and was examined by Cardinals? head team physician Dr. George Paletta on Friday. The tear is small enough where he’ll attempt to rehab the elbow for a couple weeks in hopes of avoiding a second Tommy John surgery. Either way, he’ll be out of action indefinitely.

Orioles signed OF Lew Ford to a minor league contract.

He’s batting leadoff and playing center field for Triple-A Norfolk on Friday night. Ford has played the last two seasons with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League and hasn’t appeared in the majors since 2007 as a member of the Twins. While surprising and noteworthy, it’s a pure organizational depth move as the O’s sort through some injuries.

Padres placed INF/OF James Darnell on the 15-day disabled list with a subluxation of his left shoulder.

Darnell suffered the injury while attempting to make a diving catch during Thursday’s game. For what it’s worth, it’s the very same shoulder which required surgery last September. The timeline for his return isn’t yet known.

Padres placed RHP Tim Stauffer on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 15, with a right elbow sprain.

Well, that was fast. After beginning the year on the disabled list with an elbow strain, Stauffer made his season debut Monday against the Nationals and gave up four runs (three earned) over five innings. But the elbow is apparently still an issue. The newly-claimed Eric Stults may replace him in the starting rotation.

Ryan Doumit (calf) took early batting practice and is available to pinch-hit Friday against the Brewers.

The Twins decided against placing Doumit on the disabled list, but he’s expected to be limited to pinch-hitting duties this weekend after suffering a left calf strain on Wednesday. Look for him to return to the lineup when the Twins have the option of the DH again on Tuesday.

Padres recalled RHP Nick Vincent from Triple-A Tucson.

As expected. Vincent has only made three appearances in the minors this year due to an ankle injury, but he posted a solid 2.27 ERA and 89/20 K/BB ratio over 79 1/3 relief innings in Double-A last season. Look for him in middle relief.

Blake Wood will undergo Tommy John surgery within the next two weeks.

Wood hasn’t pitched in the majors this season due to what was originally described as an irritated ulnar nerve in his right elbow. He’ll be sidelined for the rest of the season and likely for the early part of 2013, as well. The 26-year-old right-hander had a 3.75 ERA and 62/32 K/BB ratio over 69 2/3 innings out of the Royals’ bullpen last year.

Dr. Lewis Yocum confirmed that Danny Duffy has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

Yocum confirmed the initial diagnosis by Royals head physician Dr. Key. Duffy will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery in Los Angeles within the next two weeks and figures to miss the early part of the 2013 campaign. It’s disappointing given the improvement he showed this season, but there’s still plenty of promise here in the long-term.

Buster Posey is not in Friday’s lineup against the Athletics.

It’s just a routine day of rest for Posey, who is hitting .295/.348/.443 on the year. Hector Sanchez will start behind the dish while Brandon Belt plays first base.

Joaquin Arias (forearm) is back in the Giants’ starting lineup Friday against the Athletics.

Arias hasn’t played since being hit in the left forearm by a pitch during Tuesday’s game, but he’s back at third base Friday. The 27-year-old is hitting .250 (14-for-56) with five RBI in 17 games this year and is getting a chance at playing time with Pablo Sandoval (hamate bone surgery) on the mend, but he’s a pretty weak fantasy option, even in NL-only leagues.

Giants’ minor league right-hander Luis Rojas was suspended 50 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

Rojas tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol. The 22-year-old right-hander owns a 5.09 ERA in parts of six seasons in the minors and has never pitched above High-A. He’s not a promising prospect and the suspension won’t do anything to help his standing.

Mets prospect infielder Danny Muno was suspended 50 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

Muno tested positive for a metabolite of Drostanolone. The 23-year-old has a .325/.418/.492 batting line over his first 97 games in the lower levels of the minor leagues and was ranked as the organization’s No. 30 prospect by Baseball America over the winter.

Jesus Montero is not in the Mariners’ lineup for the second straight day Friday.

The M’s don’t have the DH available this weekend against the Rockies, so Montero will sit while John Jaso makes the start behind the plate. Montero has just three hits in his last 30 at-bats, so perhaps the rest will do him some good.

Gordon Beckham hit a solo homer in the top of the eighth to propel the White Sox to a 3-2 victory over the Cubs on Friday.

Beckham also had a big play earlier in the game, when he rolled into David DeJesus on a play at second base, knocking him off the bag, and somehow got the out call out of it. Beckham’s homer was his third of the season. They’ve all come this month after he hit just .153 during April.

Philip Humber yielded two runs in 6 1/3 innings Friday in a no-decision versus the Cubs.

Humber has turned in back-to-back quality starts since the May 7 shellacking in which he gave up eight runs to the Indians. Still, his only victory on the season came in his perfect game last month. He was taken out with a 2-1 lead today, but there were runners on second and third with one out at the time and Matt Thornton allowed the lead runner to score before getting out of the seventh inning.

Michael Morse (lat) took swings off a tee Friday.

Morse is quickly ramping up baseball activities after being shut down in April with a torn right lat muscle. He’s expected to travel to Viera, Florida on Monday to begin getting at-bats in extended spring training games. Barring any setbacks, he could join the Nationals’ lineup in the early part of June.

Indians send OF Nick Weglarz outright to Double-A Akron.

Weglarz cleared waivers after being designated for assignment by the Indians last weekend. The 24-year-old is batting just .202/.295/.333 in 24 games this year at the Double-A level.

Addison Reed pitched a scoreless ninth for a save in a one-run game against the Cubs on Friday.

Reed is 4-for-4 saving games since taking over for Hector Santiago earlier this month. He did have the one huge misstep when he gave up six runs in a non-save situation five days ago, but that’s the only times he’s been scored upon in 16 appearances this season.

Cardinals recall OF Adron Chambers from Triple-A Memphis.

Chambers, who appeared in 18 games with the Cardinals last season, was hitting .308/.377/.391 with one homer, 12 RBI, four stolen bases and a .768 OPS over his first 151 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this year. He’ll provide some depth in the outfield with Carlos Beltran nursing a knee injury and Allen Craig on the disabled list with a hamstring strain.

Kerry Wood ended his career by striking out Dayan Viciedo, the lone hitter he faced, in Friday’s game against the White Sox.

Wood then got to walk off the mound to a standing ovation and a hug from son on the way to the dugout. It was a great ending to a career that didn’t have nearly as many highs as once seemed destined but that was pretty darn good nonetheless.

Cardinals recalled RHP Brandon Dickson from Triple-A Memphis.

He’ll take the place of the injured Kyle McClellan (elbow) on the active roster. Dickson, who appeared in four games with the Cards last year, had a 3.42 ERA and 31/11 K/BB ratio in 47 1/3 innings over his first eight starts at the Triple-A level this season. Look for him in middle relief.

Cardinals placed RHP Kyle McClellan on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.

The severity of the injury isn’t yet known, but McClellan admitted after leaving Thursday’s game that he’s dealt with discomfort in the area for the past two weeks. It’s worth noting that the 27-year-old right-hander previously underwent Tommy John surgery as a minor leaguer back in 2005. We should have more clarity on his situation soon.

Cardinals placed 1B/OF Allen Craig on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 17, with a strained left hamstring.

As expected. Craig initially downplayed the injury as a day-to-day situation, but it’s apparently more serious than initially believed. It’s a tough break for the Cardinals and fantasy owners alike, as the 27-year-old is hitting .373/.424/.765 with five homers, 19 RBI and a 1.188 OPS through 59 plate appearances this season.

Denard Span (hamstring) is back in Friday’s lineup against the Brewers.

Span hasn’t played since Monday due to right hamstring tightness. The 28-year-old center fielder is hitting .292 with seven RBI, four stolen bases and 13 runs scored through his first 34 games this year.

Mark Teixeira is not in Friday’s lineup against the Reds.

Just a day for Teixeira, who has been sick since the first week of the season and is batting just .234 with five homers and a .669 OPS through 37 games. Nick Swisher will make the start at first base Friday while Raul Ibanez plays right field and DeWayne Wise plays left.

Chris Young’s next start in the minors will be pushed back because his wife is expected to give birth.

Young, who is working his way back from shoulder surgery, posted a 2.53 ERA and 6/2 K/BB ratio over his first two starts with High-A St. Lucie. The veteran right-hander is expected to make his next start with Triple-A Buffalo. He’s no sure thing given his injury history, but he has a chance to join the Mets’ rotation in mid-June if all goes well.

Ike Davis is not in Friday’s lineup against the Blue Jays.

The struggling Davis will take a seat against the left-hander Ricky Romero while Justin Turner will make the start at first base. Lucas Duda will serve as the DH while Scott Hairston plays right field.

Rickie Weeks has been dropped to sixth in the order for Friday’s game against the Twins.

Weeks has primarily batted first or second this year, but he can’t seem to shake out of his early funk. The 29-year-old is hitting just .156 over his first 36 games this year and leads the National League with 49 strikeouts. Norichika Aoki will hit No. 2 and start in center field Friday against left-hander Scott Diamond.

Daniel Murphy is expected to get the day off Monday.

The Mets are in the middle of playing 20 games in 20 days, so manager Terry Collins just wants to give his everyday guys a breather. Murphy currently ranks ninth in the National League with a .331 batting average.

David Wright will get the day off Saturday.

Wright is sick and the Mets are in the midst of playing 20 games in 20 days, so manager Terry Collins doesn’t want to push it. He should be back in there Sunday.

The Padres will recall right-hander Nick Vincent from Triple-A Tucson.

The Padres have yet to make an official announcement, but Vincent is expected to be added to the roster prior to Friday’s game. The 25-year-old right-hander has only made three appearances in the minors this year, but he posted a a 2.27 ERA and 89/20 K/BB ratio over 79 1/3 relief innings in Double-A last season.

Will Rhymes (arm) is available off the bench Friday.

Rhymes didn’t play Thursday after he was hit in the right arm by a pitch on Wednesday. He took swings in the cage Friday and felt fine, but the Rays may hold him out of action for another day as a precaution. Consider him day-to-day.

Placido Polanco (knee) is not in Friday’s lineup.

Polanco hasn’t played since leaving Wednesday’s game after fouling a ball of his left knee. Hitting isn’t an issue, but it’s playing defense that gives him problems. Ty Wigginton it at third base again Friday.

Diamondbacks optioned OF A.J. Pollock to Triple-A Reno.

He batted just .229/.278/.333 with one homer over 48 at-bats in his first go-round in the big leagues. Pollock was no longer needed with Chris Young back healthy.

Diamondbacks activated OF Chris Young from the 15-day disabled list.

Young had been expected to spend the weekend at Triple-A Reno, but his rehab assignment went so well that the D’Backs went ahead and activated him. While they admit that his throwing might not be 100 percent, his hitting looks fine, which is all fantasy owners care about. Return him to your lineup immediately.

Updating an earlier item, Paul Konerko has a small laceration above his left eye, as well as some swelling as the result of being hit by a Jeff Samardzija pitch Friday.

He’s far from out of the woods, as he’ll undergo further testing, which will surely involve X-ray. The White Sox will be hoping that he simply has a black eye and not an orbital fracture. We’ll update his status when more is known.

Pirates optioned RHP Evan Meek to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Meek was just recalled Wednesday but allowed three runs in just one inning of work in his lone appearance. He should be back up eventually.

Pirates recalled OF Gorkys Hernandez from Triple-A Indianapolis.

A speedy, defensive-first outfielder, Hernandez was batting .266/.343/.355 with two homers and seven steals at Indy. He could get a shot at some playing time in left field with Alex Presley now in the minors.
