Eduardo Nunez (Yankees)

5/21/12 6:15 pm

Eduardo Nunez has been placed on Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s disabled list with a sore right thumb.

At this point, the injury isn’t considered major, but obviously Nunez won’t be brought back up by the Yanks anytime soon. He was sent down on May 11 to work on his defense at shortstop and second base.

Will Middlebrooks (Red Sox)

5/21/12 6:14 pm

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington indicated Monday that the club is leaning toward keeping Will Middlebrooks in the majors when Kevin Youkilis (back) is activated from the disabled list.

It was previously thought that Middlebrooks would be sent down once Youkilis was ready to return, but the Red Sox are weighing their options now that Cody Ross (foot) will be sidelined for six to eight weeks. The Red Sox had previously dismissed the possibility of playing Middlebrooks in the outfield, something he has never done professionally, but now they may have no other choice.

Manny Banuelos (Yankees)

5/21/12 6:14 pm

Yankees pitching prospect Manny Banuelos has been placed on the disabled list at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre with a sore left elbow.

No word yet on the severity of the injury. Banuelos was on the DL earlier this season with a back ailment and had pitched well since returning. Expect the Yanks to play things cautiously with their talented young lefty even if no structural damage is found.

Cody Ross (Red Sox)

5/21/12 6:12 pm

Cody Ross will not require surgery for a non-displaced fracture in his left foot, but he’ll still be sidelined for 6-8 weeks.

Initial X-rays came back negative, but a follow-up exam revealed the bad news. It’s possible Jacoby Ellsbury and/or Carl Crawford could beat him back to the lineup. With Ross out, the Red Sox are now likely to keep Will Middlebrooks on the roster following Kevin Youkilis’ return Tuesday.

John D. Gaub (Rays)

5/21/12 6:09 pm

Rays designated LHP John Gaub for assignment.

The move clears a spot for the newly-acquired Drew Sutton on the active roster. Gaub, who was claimed off waivers from the Cubs in early April, has a 4.32 ERA and 21/12 K/BB ratio in 16 2/3 innings with Triple-A Durham this season.

Jeff Keppinger (Rays)

5/21/12 6:07 pm

Rays placed INF Jeff Keppinger on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 19, with a broken right toe.

Keppinger suffered the injury when he was hit in the right foot by a foul ball while sitting in the dugout on Saturday. The timeline for his return isn’t yet known. The newly-acquired Drew Sutton will replace him on the active roster.

Ryan Roberts (Diamondbacks)

5/21/12 6:04 pm

Ryan Roberts will be moved into a utility infield role following the promotion of Josh Bell from Triple-A Reno.

Color us surprised. Roberts got off to a very slow start, but he’s hitting .321 (17-for-53) with a home run and eight RBI this month. He’ll serve as a backup at third base for now and will also split time with Aaron Hill at second base. Bell hasn’t proven that he can hit major league pitching, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the Diamondbacks change course pretty quickly.

Josh Bell (Diamondbacks)

5/21/12 5:56 pm

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Monday that Josh Bell was promoted to start at third base.

In turn, Ryan Roberts will be shifted into a utility infield role. Bell was hitting .381/.429/.619 with four homers, 30 RBI and a 1.047 OPS in 112 plate appearances with Triple-A Reno, but he has an awful .200/.221/.264 batting line and a 78/6 K/BB over 226 plate appearances in the majors. He’s worth a flier in NL-only leagues, but we don’t think this arrangement will last very long.

Lance Berkman (Cardinals)

5/21/12 5:53 pm

Lance Berkman indicated Monday that he still thinks there could be some damage to the ACL in his right knee.

An MRI on Monday showed no evidence of an ACL tear, but Berkman said he is “not as optimistic” as the team. We should have more clarity on the situation after he gets a second opinion later this week. Berkman has a torn meniscus at the very least, which is expected to keep him out of action for 6-8 weeks. Stay tuned.

Tim Lincecum (Giants)

5/21/12 5:45 pm

Tim Lincecum (thumb) feels fine following a home-plate collision during Sunday’s game.

Lincecum suffered a hyperextended left thumb while covering home plate Sunday when A’s outfielder Collin Cowgill knocked him over. He’s wearing a wrap on the thumb, but is permitted to participate in all baseball activities. He should be fine for his next scheduled start Friday against the Marlins.
