Andy Pettitte (Yankees)

1/25/13 9:25 am

Manager Joe Torre is considering adding Andy Pettitte to Team USA’s World Baseball Classic roster.

Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News reported last week that Pettitte had declined an invitation to play in the WBC, but apparently he’s still on the fence. Torre notes that the Yankees have “voiced their concern” over the 40-year-old pitching for Team USA. “That’s the most important thing, to make everybody comfortable with what’s going on,” Torre said. “I certainly don?t want to put any player in a stressful situation. Because that’s not what we?re doing here.”

Yankees signed 1B Dan Johnson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Johnson batted .267/.388/.492 with 28 home runs and 85 RBI in 137 games last season at Triple-A Charlotte — an affiliate of the White Sox. The 33-year-old will probably open 2013 at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Thomas Neal (Yankees)

Yankees signed OF Thomas Neal to a minor league contract.

He’ll presumably receive a spring training invite. Neal, a right-handed hitter, was released by the Indians earlier this month after hitting .314/.400/.467 with 12 homers and a .867 OPS in 117 games at the Triple-A level last season. Even if he doesn’t win a roster spot, he’ll be useful depth in the organization.

Reegie Corona (Yankees)

Yankees re-signed INF Reegie Corona to a minor league contract.

Corona missed the last two seasons due to injuries, but was recently cleared to participate in the Venezuelan Winter League. The 26-year-old infielder will provide depth with the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate.

Freddy Garcia (Yankees)

1/20/13 5:42 pm

According to the Miami Herald, Freddy Garcia has expressed interest in playing for the Marlins.

Garcia has been linked to the Twins and Rockies so far this offseason, and is marketing himself as both a starting pitcher and reliever. He posted a 5.20 ERA in 30 appearances (17 starts) with the Yankees in 2012. While the Marlins don’t currently have a spot for him in their rotation, he could provide insurance behind Nathan Eovaldi and Jacob Turner.

David Robertson requested $3.55 million and was offered $2.85 million from the Yankees when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday.

Robertson, who is arbitration-eligible for the second time, earned $1.6 million last season while posting a 2.67 ERA and 81/19 K/BB ratio over 60 2/3 innings. The two sides will try to find a middle ground prior to a possible hearing in February.

Boone Logan (Yankees)

1/18/13 1:28 pm

Yankees avoided arbitration with LHP Boone Logan by agreeing to a one-year, $3.15 million contract.

It’s a nice score for Logan, who is in his final year of arbitration eligibility. The southpaw has put up a 3.42 ERA over the last three years for the Yankees and will be used as a lefty specialist again in 2013.

Alex Rodriguez (Yankees)

1/18/13 8:32 am

Dr. Bryan Kelly told the Yankees that he discovered less cartilage damage in Alex Rodriguez’s surgically-repaired left hip than expected.

“It was minimal,” a source told the New York Daily News. “Now it’s up to his rehab.” While the good news isn’t expected to affect A-Rod’s projected six-month timetable, it does give him a better chance at avoiding complications during his rehab. Assuming all goes well, Rodriguez will be back around the All-Star break.

Joba Chamberlain (Yankees)

1/17/13 7:39 pm

Yankees and RHP Joba Chamberlain avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract.

Chamberlain posted a 4.35 ERA and 22/6 K/BB ratio in 20 2/3 innings last season for the Yankees after returning from major elbow and ankle injuries. The 27-year-old right-hander was arbitration-eligible for the final time. If he’s not locked up, he’ll hit the free agent market in November.

Mark Teixeira (Yankees)

1/17/13 3:18 pm

In an interview with MLB Network on Thursday, Mark Teixeira said he’s hasn’t had any setbacks with the calf injury that limited to a career-low 123 games last season.

“Last season, unfortunately, was one of those years where I had a lot of nagging injuries and I played through them and they got worse,” he said. “When you’re young, you can do that. I have to be careful now, be smarter.” Teixeira will expose himself to the possibility of re-injury by playing for Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, but has been given medical clearance by the Yankees and claims to be fully healthy. Andy Pettitte was also expected to join Teixeira in the tournament, but has been left off the provisional 27-man roster.
